I've been looking for tray prices everywhere but I can't seem to find any.

I'm specifically looking for info on the lower end 32nm quads that are due out in a few weeks.

Xeon side..

None on the consumer i7 side.

I heard it will range from 300 -> 1600

And im seeing them as absolute beasts / monsters if you love overclocking.

I told this to people back last year.

32nm (tock) cycle will feel like how you felt when you went Kentsfield -> Yorkfield.

NO JOKE!

They will be irrelevant when Sandy Bridge cores arrive. Better play with Sandy, its new AVX instruction set and the 256bit pipelines. When the recompiled programs emerge on Sandy, you'll have double the throughput of Nehalem/Westmere on heavy fp programs, clock those mature 32nm Sandy cores above and beyond call of duty, dinner served.

if i can get a 21 multiplier for $300 ill bite (Xeon is fine). I know that we wont see mainstream 32nm quads for a while.

My target is 4.3-4.5ghz under water with HT enabled.

I don't think there is a midrange quad core Xeon with a 21 multipler?

According to the list I have seen 18x,19x and 20x are what we can choose from.

Could a 19x multiplier Xeon end up clocking better than the 20x model?

Heck, even the 14x multi on the L5609, they are a breeze to clock. You need good parts to back it up but even with my "junk ram" and Asrock mobo, it walked into 230 bclk. I didn't even try pushing further since a 965 fell into my board on accident!

As a corollary, how many s1366 boards can do 225bClock or better? Cheapest that can do so? I want 4.5Ghz if Im gonna go back to s1366.

This is my concern, a lot of 1366 boards have the same 212 bclk limit. The ones that don't are pushing $300 for the mobo alone.

As I stated, my Asrock does ~230 bclk fine. Anandtech reviewed the same board and got 230 as well.

Mine was a $118 open box one to boot!!

My guess is those who are complaining about low bclk's aren't taking the needed time to tweak them in. Hell, my brother hit ~230 bclk on his DX58SO which is notorious for low bclk numbers but it took a LOT of effort to get it there.

I'll probably do some xtremesystems research before i decide on which X58 board i want for my shiny new 32nm quad.

I want 4.5ghz, so if the 18x multi is the most i can get for $300 on the cpu... ill need a 250 bclk which isn't realistic.

Don't forget that a lot of X58 boards (Asus for one) allows you to "lock" the turbo multiplier. For the 920, this means your multi is 21 instead of 20. This could mean the lowest-end Xeon could have a 19x (or maybe higher?) multiplier locked in your BIOS. Just a thought...This helps reduce the Bclk you would need to hit 4.5ghz.

Yeah 19x237 doesn't seem TOO unrealistic, but thats still pushing it pretty hard with current low-end (cheap) X58s.

2.26 = 17x multi ~ 18 or 19x with turbo on... i think Xeons might have a +2 turbo instead of a +1... (not too sure about this, but i heard... )

2.4 = 18x multi ~ 19x or 20x with turbo.. <--- might be your best bet... (getting a slight feeling of a Q6600 here... )

2.53 = 19x multi... i think this is where things are gonna get expensive....

Thanks Aigo! I suspected the Xeons will have a better max turbo than the existing 1366 quads, but I didn't for sure. The 2.4 with a max 20x multi seems like it could be the best "bang for the buck" SKU. Any extra bumps in the multi only makes the OC easier...

From that chart the X5650 (2.66 hex) and E5640 (2.66 quad) might be a sweet spot for overclockers. I just wonder what the prices will be. Won't the lower process help prices somewhat compared to the i7's?

It'll certainly help the cost. I doubt it'll change prices much since there is zero competition.

Stay away from X.

X = usually dual QPI bus.

Dual QPI bus = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Cheaper gulftown for consumers ...

i7 970. :T
Although cheaper probably means like 599.
