Any MS "Movie Makers" on?

I'd like to do two things with the video on my camcorder--burn DVDs with the 60 minutes of video, but also cut it up into mini clips to email/play with on the computer.

Once I open MS Movie Maker, it gives me a few options..."Best quality for playback on computer," which sounds like what I want for the latter. The file size is like 3M/minute...perfect.

"Digital Device Format (DV-AVI)" sort of sounds like what I want for the former (burn DVDs), but I am not sure...file size is no joke here...178M/minute. I couldn't even get the whole hour on a DVD (or does it compress the file when burning DVDs?).

Any ideas what I should do here? I finally got the card in the PC and the cable to pull these on to the computer, but not sure what I need to do now. Help!

Okay, I found this:

3. If the video you are going to capture is temporary and you'll delete it after burning your DVD, or you intend to experiment with any additional DVD burning utilities besides MyDVD, or you insist on the highest possible quality for a permanent record of what you are capturing, then select Digital device format (DV-AVI). It'll take a lot of disk space, but you'll not lose any quality. If you want a single-step process in capturing your video and also archiving it to your hard disk or a DVD-ROM or tape, and great quality but not perfect quality is fine for you, then click Other settings and click High quality video (NTSC) from the list, as shown in Figure 1. Your resulting quality will be perfectly fine for DVDs, and even though the file size will be large, it'll still be about one-eighth the size of a DV-AVI file.

...sounds like the best setting for a DVD, but doing some fuzzy math yields:

178M/minute....60 minutes...60X178M=10.7Gig...Holy AVI, Batman.

Is there a way to compress this to a 4G dvd?!? Or is this overkill. I do a 50" widescreen, so I would like the highest quality possible for the DVDs. The 3M/min option is fine for my computer needs. Please advise.

Just get a program that will convert DV-AVI to mpeg2 (DVD format). That will solve your file size problem.

Thanks. Sounds good. Suggestions?

Yea, I went through the MS site and found a ton of info, so I guess the DV-AVI route is best when you plan to burn home DVDs...will look into some choices for the mpeg2 conversion, but welcome any suggestions.
