Any natural nicotine products out there?

I have a mild case of tourettes syndrome, and when I was younger my neurologist told me of an experimental new drug they were using to relieve the symptoms: nicotine.

I tried the nicotine patches, but being younger, the "buzz" overwhelmed me, and made me feel nauseous and tired, but it did alleviate the symptoms.

Now that I am older, I have noticed that when I have a cigar, all my symptoms disappear.

I dont want to take up smoking (aside from the occasional cigar), and I dont want to pay for nicotine patches. Is there a natural, healthy way for me to get nicotine? Like a nicotine based tea or something?

what exactly does a mild case of tourettes mean? or perhaps more accurately phrased...how does your tourettes affect your life?

and are you completely opposed to smoking? it IS possible to get tobacco without additives.

Mild as in, not really noticeable to other people, but it effects my concentration quite a bit. That gum used to be extremely expensive.. is it still as pricey as it used to be? I smoke an occasional cigar, but would rather not smoke cigarettes, regardless of whether there are additives or not.

Buy the damn nicotine patches.

Nicotine is strong stuff, gram for gram. Smoking works because most of it gets burned up, otherwise there's probably enough nicotine in a cigarette to cause you some problems. "Natural" remedies are usually produced with pretty wide product tolerance and certainly not under FDA scrutiny. You don't want to overdose on it accidentally.

I think it's about $35-40 for a bunch of gum. Guess it depends on how much you'd be using.

The majority of uses of nicotine are just for getting the fix on it, through smoking or chewing, or the products to cut down dependence like patches and gum. I don't think there's enough of a market to actually be any products for people who just want nicotine because of perceived health benefits.

Nicotine in its natural state is safe and non toxic. Nicotine is a naturally occurring compound.

The fact that that article starts using the statement that it's naturally occurring right off the bat kind of takes away some of the authority to me. Lots of natural substances will kill you with a microgram, and lots of artificial substances cause no harm at all. Wailing about things being natural has become the standard for any flaky, scammy product claimed to have health benefits. The rest of the page just confirms that it's basically an "anti-anti-nicotine" biased article, just based on the way it's written, plus the lack of any references about all the studies that are supposed to prove it's okay.

Plus, you know, the advertisement for a nicotine-containing drink at the end.

It functions as an antiherbivore chemical, being a potent neurotoxin with particular specificity to insects; therefore nicotine was widely used as an insecticide in the past, and currently nicotine derivatives such as imidacloprid continue to be widely used.

It is more toxic than many other alkaloids such as cocaine, which has an LD50|LD50 of 95.1 mg/kg when administered to mice.

Just because it does have health benefits doesn't mean it's totally safe. Nearly every drug/medication is toxic at higher doses, they're all essentially poisons. You have to consider the health risks (it being a stimulant, affecting blood pressure and glucose levels, and other things) and whether there are other treatments that would present fewer risks, or at least more acceptable risks.

There is the Nicogel stuff linked in the wikipedia article. And the "nicotini". But the patch or gum is probably the safest option to get low doses.

Tobacco itself is not as bad as the additive-laden final products tobacco companies sell... Still not fantastic for you, but won't do as much damage as quickly.

Going back to a doc and getting a prescription for patches/gum/whatever so insurance might pay some for it seems like a good idea.
