Any new File Systems?

I want to see a new file system come out that's even better than NTFS. Contiguous, redundancy, indexing, on the fly encryption, new permissions scheme...

Although I'm sure Linux has several wonderful file systems to choose from.

Well Linux supports tons of the things. But look up Reiser 4. Its a fully atomic FS (i.e. an operation either totaly happens or not at all even if you turn the power off half way though).

WinFS was basically NTFS + an SQL data base. It would have been slow and pretty pointless. Reiser 4 with other searching programs you can get for linux would far excede WinFS's feature set. (Just as OSX and Xorg have both surpassed (or are about to) what Avalon is supposed to bring).

winfs will be realeased as an add-on to longhorn and i believe also xp/2000 one year after longhorn's release, along with longhorn server. i think it's gonna be free, but i'm not sure. anyway, i don't need extra searching features (isn't that what winfs is all about?); i want a faster, cleaner, and redundant fs. i'm dreaming, though.

It's just that we see technological advances in hardware, and video, but not much in the OS. Look how long FAT was patched. NTFS was a great replacement, but it borrowed (stole?) a lot of it's concepts from HPFS which was a superior. Which drives getting as big as they are, it would be nice to see a new file system that was even more efficient. With as many data recovery emergencies I've had to go through this past year, it would be nice to see a new file system that could repair itself when certain parts got corrupted.

and to stay on topic. Is anyone aware of how many times WinFS has been pushed back now? I believe it was originally slated to be in winxp, then longhorn, now after longhorn as an add-on. Personally I run reiserfs on my stuff. I've never bothered to encrypt my file system though I know that encrypting /home is pretty popular and can be done quite easily and transparently.

IIRC, sometime around the release of NT 3.5, Microsoft announced that they were working on Cairo and that it would have a new database-based filesystem. (Cairo later became Windows NT 4.0.) I'm not sure when they started calling it WinFS, though.
