pardon my ignorance, but what are the potential issues with factory image? I did not buy mine through carrier I bought it from Amazon, same model that's sold in play store. Wouldn't factory image be the most fitting one? or is it something like a beta version?

I'm in the same boat as you, just got mine from Amazon on Tuesday and got AT&T to exchange my SIM from my S5. I'll try the same steps they gave you because I'm impatient :whiste:

I'd guess the Amazon one is the international OTA, personally I'd just flash the factory image but I don't mind unlocking the bootloader.

How do people like google now on tap? It looked pretty cool from the previews but I'm wondering how helpful it is irl.

It looks and feels exactly like 5.x... except for the bragging rights there is very little to be happy about...

Think of it as the Windows 7 to Lollipop's Vista. Not a huge visual change, but it cleans up a lot of the stuff underneath the hood that people hated about Lollipop.

I think the massive improvement in battery life is about as exciting as I could hope for. The rest is just gravy.
Except doze is a joke. You have to not only have the screen off (read: long idle), but you also can't move it. I don't know about you, but I'm always on the move, and my phone is constantly moving. I can only see Doze being beneficial for tablets where they might sit home w/ long idle periods between use.

I want to see some tools that actually improve battery life from Google.

I'll add a sub rant, these Android releases are just not exciting. I'm looking at all the development that iOS is going through, and there's some great things there (granted some features we've had on Android for a while). Meanwhile we're stuck with Material Design UI (don't get me started), and all under the hood minor improvements. It's almost like Android lost it's excitement since 2013. I am lucky to be able to use both platforms, and swap back and forth between both.

Yeah, ios is definitely catching up, in few years they might even surpass if Android is not careful D

My Nexus would keep discharging throughout the night and during the day sitting at the table, so I am definitely seeing a significant difference. It's also running cooler, previously I could feel its warmth after few minutes of sure, today after the update, not so much...

Disclaimer - it was laden with apps before, right now only has about 20% of pre upgrade

I guess it could be some other reason than Doze to explain why my battery life is so much better with 6.0. I am also on the move almost all day with my phone in my pocket and my battery life is better by a substantial margin. I use my phone a lot throughout the day and on 5.x it wasn't unusual for me to do a top-off charge in the afternoon. More days than not my remaining battery was in the single digits by the time I went to bed. With 6.0 I have been at 40% or so at the end of the day with no top off so that's a significant improvement for me.

Again, this is just anecdotal and it could be that something had gone wrong in my previous installation, but what I am seeing is that my battery doesn't drain nearly as quickly when I am in a poor cell quality area (which would be my work location). Perhaps Google tweaked the radio drivers and that explains what I am seeing. My battery life has always been excellent when I am at home.

What's so exciting about the new iOS release? 3D touch looks pretty neat but other than that it was a pretty boring update.

No, you just compared software updates with hardware updates. 3D Touch is a hardware feature introduced in the iPhone 6S/6S+. I'm talking purely about software - Marshmallow update vs. iOS 9. I did say some things introduced in iOS9 were already in Android. But, here is a complete iOS9 changelog, if you're interested. I'm not trying to start an Android v. iOS war - all I'm saying is the progress in recent iOS releases is way more exciting than Android I'm excited for both platforms still, and will continue to use them both.

Did you do a fresh install or a dirty upgrade? Regardless, it's nice that you're having a good experience so far! I have a 2015 Moto G, which is my daily driver, and has excellent battery life. I can't wait till Moto pushes Marshmallow, because I'd love to do a before/after comparison. So far, I've been playing with the official release on my N5.

A keyboard that doesn't yell at you all the time.

Oh and split screen.
YES! The keyboard was one of the things that drove me nuts on iOS. I was happy when they added 3rd party keyboard support, but I had a terrible experience w/ Swiftkey on iOS. It was too slow...I'm glad they finally added this feature in iOS.

It's nice to see multitasking. Waiting for Google to do something similar (excluding Touchwiz and other implementations).

I did a fresh install. I also did a fresh install back on 5.1 to teach myself how to do it. One of these days I might actually get around to rooting this thing.

Ah ok. Did you install the same apps/use it the same way, so the comparison is a bit more realistic?

I highly encourage learning how to root. You'll learn so much! The first thing I do with any Android phone is unlock bootloader, and root it. If you mess up your phone, you'll likely be more prepared and know how to fix it. What phone do you have? There are some great guides (as well as videos) on how to root.

I have all the same apps installed (did the normal Google account restore) so it should be pretty much the same.

I did the whole root/recovery/ROM thing on my Note 2 so I have done it, I just haven't tried it on this phone (Nexus 6). With my Note I really felt a need to go custom because I found I liked a more stock Android experience and I also hate waiting for updates. My my Nexus, it almost feels like I am running the same way I was with my modded Note so I haven't felt a great need to do it. I do want to get around to it sooner rather than later though, I was just waiting for 6.0 to drop first.

Granted it is a tablet, but doze has been amazing on my N7 so far.

I'll say this, doze is going to become less and less useful once app developers realize they can bypass it. If Google was smart, bypassing doze would be a permission you could revoke...

I'm waiting on my dev to sync it to the current ROM I'm on. It should be updated soon. I could flash the images myself but I prefer being rooted and having advanced power menu and ad block plus a few other root apps.

From those that have got the update, battery life and memory management has improved a lot from what they say.

Go for it, look at post #64, few things to keep in mind

For this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008
Follow method 2, don't bother with method 1.

In this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/noob-read-adb-fastboot-how-help-t3006500

Worry only about fastboot/bootloader, ignore all adb/recovery stuff, you wont need them for method 2

Excellent news so far - hopefully the battery life improvements on Nexus devices translates to others. While my previous Note 4 didn't get that much worse battery life on Lollipop vs. KK, it did get worse. I'd be happy to just gain that back - anything else on top would be gravy.

Yup one thing I'm excited for when this ROM is updated to M. I use a lot of location apps recently and my battery isn't as good as it used to be. Hopefully now it gets better.

Is the clock app any better on Android 6?

My problem with the A5 clock app was that stored timers were stored in a seemingly random order (though I'd hazard a guess that they're shown in the order they were saved in), whereas on A4.4 they're stored in order of the size of the timer (which makes them a lot easier to browse through).

I use the timer functions an awful lot, which was one of the reasons I went back to A4.4.4 on my N5.

Please could someone answer my question?

I would be happy to test this for you, but you are going to have to tell me how to save a timer lol. I went to test this and (a) realized I have never used a timer and (b) can't figure out how to save one. I don't see any option in the app to save one.

When you create a timer (and I mean a countdown timer), it saves it automatically for future use. I have about six set up because I am that passionate about cooking

It appears that the timers are still stored in the order they were created, not by length.

I just yell at my phone to set timers. Way easier than flicking through a list.

I also use Timely. It doesn't store a timer history, because seriously what's the point.

Yeah this is the first time I've ever heard someone talk about storing and sorting timers. I'm sure there's an app for that if it's so important? I certainly wouldn't base my OS level choice around it, but he did say that was one of the reasons.
