Any OC'd i5's out there yet?

As the title says wondering if anybody has got there hands on an i5 yet and even better over clocked it?

I fell victim to the table of P55 boards in Micro Center yesterday. I was like what are those doing out.....why in the world would you get the motherboard when you can't get the CPU yet? Soon after my better sense came to me and I walked over to the CPU's, low and behold there where the new i5's and i7's.

I wondered the store for a short while pondering on getting a CPU and Mobo. I finally decided not to and headed to the check out. From there I made it to the truck loaded all my goodies up and was about to get in.......then said what the hell and went and picked up some memory, a board and a processor.

So to the point hopefully this thing will be running in a the next half hour. I am going to run it through the ringers with the stock cooler just because. Then I have a couple other coolers I am going to try out just to compare.....well after I see how this set up does with my best cooler.

Any updates yet? I'd love to hear about your OCing adventures since I'm interested in an i5 as well.

I saw some preliminary testing getting Core i5 750 to 4.0ghz on stock cooling. Although it was not indicated whether that was prime 95 stable.

What cpu and mobo did you get? Let us know your results.

No no fail thank god. Just got side tracked......then had to find my wifi deal since no internet in that room. Then SLI wasn't working so had to fix that.

But it is up and running. Temps maybe good maybe not. Need to figure out which ones are correct. Real Temp and Core Temp are showing low 40's at a near idle (just internet surfing). Speed fan is showing much lower temps.

Ran Prime and temps shot up to 70+ so shut it down. Been a long day so going to investigate tomorrow and figure what temps are right. I fear it is the higher ones though.

Here are the specs on the machine:

Case: AZZA Solana 1000 (very surprised by this case)

Mobo: MSI P55-GD65

CPU: i5 750

Memory: Corsair XMS-3 4gb (not first choice)

GPU's: GTS-250's in SLI

Power Supply: ..........can't think of it lol

I will definitely post an update on here when I can pull my self away

Cheers

Dominic

EDIT: Just checked 24.5c in here so somethings up if those are the right temps. Will check it out tomorrow.

Trust Real Temp or Core Temp. Speedfan takes temps from elsewhere.

I have drawn a line in the sand for myself on i5.

4.5ghz, or i ride the P35 wave for another year.

I want at least a 20% cpu performance boost.

I can toss another vid card in old faithful here and be set.

I hope you aren't being a guinea pig. More than likely those temps are due to the early bios (hopefully) and as it matures, its possible temps will go down.

I would have to say yes I am a guinea pig. No choice this early in the game

Update:Well I let the PC run all night in hopes of some sort of burn in.....at basically an idle. This morning it is idling at 40c so it has gone down some which could be just the ambient temp.

As of right now there is no room to overclock. I am going to pull the stock fan put some Arctic Silver on it and see how it does. I put the cooler on with the paste that came on it just to see how it did for testing purposes.

Will update some more in a bit.

Arghh!!! I want too. Having a hell of a time figure out my temp problem. I have a few different coolers laying around.....didn't think of the fact that this is an intel product so of course they had to change the mounting pattern.....Intel really could take some notes from AMD.

I do have it running cooler. 10-15 degrees across the board with my sweet custom built fan mount. So I will mess with it in a bit. Not going to get great over clocks out of it though as the cooler is far from properly mounted see below.

Doh once I figure out how to put a pic here.

Come on. Get it set up right. 70's won't hurt. Heck, 90's are fine for a short time when testing stability. They aren't that fragile. lol

I guess the reviews will be out tomorrow anyway.

I am satisfied with temps and my crazy fan set up. Going to start OC'ing in just a minute here. Sorry too keep you all waiting

Okay here is my first stable OC.

3.5ghz at 175x20 @ stock voltage.

Only settings that have been changed are the basics like spread spectrum and power related ones. The only one that was changed that could effect anything was DDR voltage which I upped just a little.

Now the fun starts of tweaking settings to go further. Guess I will be lazy and start with voltage lol.

Oh strangely my under load temps have dropped. Cruising in the mid 60's with this clock.

You running stock cooler? I am surprised there are almost no socket 1156 cooler available. With an aftermarket one you can probably get up there to 4.0-4.2ghz.

Well calling it quits for now. Running at 4ghz on very questionable cooling. Computer runs but is not Prime or linX stable (probably mostly cooling) I am a total noob when it comes to i5 or i7 overclocking so a few new settings and things I need to get a better understanding of.

Going to head to the Micro Center in the A.M. and see if I can find a cooler or bracket for this thing.

In conclusion I am far from an expert overclocker. I really feel with the right cooling and knowledge these will do low 4.0ghz no problem on air that is. And as little experience as I have with H2O I could not say what people will get lol.

I have much to learn when it comes to these CPU's so I am up for any input I can get. So far I have only adjusted CPU Voltage, VVT, and Dram.

Till tomorrow

Dominic

Congrats on the nice overclock! How far did you have to bump the voltage to get 4ghz, and what are your idle and load temps? It will be interesting to see if properly fastening the cooler makes a difference.

Hmmm numbers are in other room. I bumped the voltage from 1.2625 to 1.3625. Temps are through the roof right now under full load. Like getting into the low 80's. I have to believe that the temps are right after all and this CPU I got just runs on the hot side. Idle temps are just a few degrees higher than stock stock=37-40c 4.0ghz=41-43. I just hope that MIcro Center has a cooler for this. If I had all my tools I would have already made a bolt on bracket for the Vendetta2 I have. Oh well to the computer store to get a fan......and of course the couple hundred dollars of other crap I will just have to have. lol

And thanks the CPU and Board did most the work. I am just glad that my Memory hasn't been my limiting factor as it has been on my last 3 over clocks. I have had really really bad luck with memory till now.

You are overclocking on that dinky stock cooler and you got 4.0ghz? That's amazing. Imagine what a $45 Scythe Mugen 2 will do when it ships with 1156 brackets, or TRUE for that matter.

No not on stock cooler. Have a Vendetta2 very crudely set up to cool it lol. If you look back a few posts you will see my very unique mounting system lol. But yes with proper cooling it should be good for over 4ghz. I am playing with settings now trying to get it prime stable. It is user stable right now but all that is on it is overclocking stuff and the net

A huge kudos and cheers/kampai/salut/prosit to you sir. That's just badass. Cooling only works if the thermal paste and tension is applied correctly, and I imagine that the current setup is severely limited, perhaps even worse than stock (no offense of course, it just takes a lot of pressure to ensure correct fitment). Thanks so much for your thread here, and I look forward to more.
