Question for you guys and gals out there. As I am a semi rookie overclocker are there any stress tests or benchmarks you would like to see?

For the cooler I'm using the Scythe Ninja 2 with the Scythe S-Flex SFF21F (Sony fluid bearing things). The default fan that comes with the ninja2 is great for a non-overclocked system but it can't push enough air to effectively use the cooler. There may be better fans now but back in 2007 AT seemed to like using an earlier version of it on their higher end air cooling reviews like this one. I got the cooler at xpcgear for $40 I think.

The power measuring is done by an old Kill-A-Watt unit. The things are great for simply measuring power around the home and cost ~$20-25. The one I've got is the P4400, available at Newegg for $20.

Basically the HT-enabled i7-860 is 40% more ($87 more at newegg) than the i5-750 so I figured for $40 or ~1/2 the difference in cost the overclocking was well worth it, and fun.

Mod7PCs it looks like you've got Load Line Calibration enabled/on/not Intel's spec is that correct? I need to do some better testing with that on/off and maybe see if AT's got any good advice on that front in their upcoming articles.

Edit: Though the cooler is nice the retention clips it uses are the same as the Intel retail coolers. Due to the size of the heatsink you have to angle your hands in odd ways to get enough pressure on them (the intel cooler is tiny and you can easily use a screw driver to help but not on the scythe and probably many other large coolers).

For stress testing, after doing the usual burn-in like you have, I tend to run a mixture of programs. Hardware often does fine w/ Prime/Sandra/etc loops, but fail video encoding or gaming stress tests. I'll usually try a few overnight mixtures with looping an rts or fps game simultaneously with some WME/virtualdub action.

Thanks for the updates. There's still not much info out there on ocing these p55 chips. I'll be curious to see how things pan out in the long term what with the PCIe altered. I had a few problems back when we used to do that in the late 90s. The memories still have me sketchy about this newer hardware.

I know of these tests. Which I have used quite often. The only variation I have used with these is running F@H at the same time.

Okay this will show how new I am too all of this.

rts? NVM google is your friend Real-time Strategy.

fps? I assume first person shooter. and yes!

how do you loop these? Right now I only have the 3 Crysis games just bought em.

and/or WME/virtualdub if you could explain just a little here. That would be great. If not I am sure I will find it on Google .

Thanks a Bunch

Sorry missed you there Gaidin. Yes it would appear I do. Bios says the opposite "shrug". When it was set to on in the Bios I was getting a huge I mean HUGE vdroop. I forget what it was but if I recall like 1.260 idle would drop to like 1.180. So I turned it off....which obviously turned it it on and it started running much better. Before this adjustment my idle temps were ridiculous when I turned up the voltages high enough to run stable. So in my case I figure it will do more good than harm.

Update:Yet another update. I know they come in spurts sorry. So as I had been saying earlier in this thread the cooler I was running didn't fit with the side cover on. Well I really need to wrap up this little project here so I put the smaller fan in. In doing so my overclock is not stable anymore. I was connecting that too the fact that there was more heat, but I also noticed failed to put the SLI bridge back on after removing the MOBO.

So back to testing. I either hit a heat barrier or PCIe barrier here. it is going to be interesting to see. I hope it is not a bother that I post so much about this current project. I just know there isn't a lot of info out on this CPU yet.

Thanks
Dominic
