Any of these games run well on my old system?

Will any of these games run well on my setup without to much slow down? As a comparison Fallout 3 runs okay, FEAR 2 is playable but slows down a lot.

Dead Space
GTA 4
Mirror's Edge

Opteron 165 stock
8800GTS 640
2GB RAM
1680x1050

Thanks!

Dead Space should run. Don't think GTA 4 will work well at all though.

I knew I forgot something important 1680x1050

Would you still hold that Mirror's edge will be ok? isn't more CPU intensive?

I think Mirror's Edge is CPU intensive but don't think it's more CPU intensive than GTA 4. You will also require more gigs of RAM to run GTA 4 smoothly.

Easily play all of those. The 8800GTS 640 is still an extremely powerful card.

I'd be most worried that your CPU couldn't keep up.
I went from a 7800GT to HD4850 both with an X2 4200+, and while there was improvement, even with the HD4850 ran poorly (1680x1050).
When I upgraded from an X2 4200+ st stock to an E5200 at 3.4GHz there was a marked improvement.
You might want to consider overclocking your CPU if you do feel like performance is sluggish, more than worrying about video card (if you do think something is holding you back).

Mostly because it's a shitty console port. Why anyone would buy this game for the PC is beyond me.

If you have a beefy rig and no console that's the only real reason. It runs great on my pc at 1920x1200 and it looks better than on ps3. My pc cost a lot more than a ps3 though, and given the opportunity to play with a controller in a lazyboy I just might take it. either way, shitty port indeed.

welcome to the world of modern gaming that requires a decent OVERALL system to run games. his cpu would make him have horrible minimum framerates in plenty of newer games. for example GTA 4 would be a freaking slideshow at times with his current pc. Dead Space should run just fine since its far from a demanding game. as for Mirrors Edge I have no idea about it.

Absolutely correct. It's not about the 8800GTS 640, it's about the entire rig itself. But, yes...this game is considerably a a bad port.

Your CPU is holding you back.

Nowadays there is performance boost in even going from a C2D to C2Q in many games like UT3, GTA IV etc.

Yeah I know I am CPU bound, otherwise I would not have started this thread.

I got Dead Space and it runs great, don't know about Mirror's Edge yet.

Update:

Mirror's Edge runs great too, perhaps I underestimated my PC. Dare I get GTA 4? Anyone running it on an X2 or Opty setup?

I told you that Dead Space and ME should do fine on your system. I would say invest in a better new game...playing GTA 4 with horrible frame-rates will certainly not be fun.

yea u are underestimating ur opty, especially since its not overclocked!!! overclock that mofo and u'll see an increase in ur avg fps. They overclock like mad. Mine's running@ 2.8ghz and still keeps up w/ new games. I'll finally be updating it this year and only because my mobo is ridiculously picky about which ram to run @ 4gb.

I didn't realize that you had a dual core. 90% games if not more will run like butter on that rig.

90% of ALL games sure... but plenty of new games will be downright sluggish at times with that cpu. once your cpu is the culprit a video card can never make up for that.

False. When I was playing TF2 on my Opteron 165 + HD3850, I would get down to around 20 fps or below because the CPU was bottlenecking. I put the same HD3850 into my E7200 system and it never dips below 55 fps. It was almost painful how bad it got on the Opteron 165.

the source engine is weird. it will run just fine on old slow cpus but will also take almost all the cpu power you can throw at. HL2 even runs smoothly on my athlon xp 2400 and 6600. of course newer source engine games are more demanding but still thats awesome for such a good looking game.

GTA 4 probably won't be an enjoyable experience. I have all three games and there is no comparison performance-wise. Dead Space and Mirror's Edge are liquid-smooth at max settings, while GTA 4 is irritatingly laggy at times.

FYI my rig is:
E8400 @ 3.6 ghz
4gb pc 8500 gskill
Asus 4870 1gb (stock)

GTA 4 runs like crap on my system regardless of resolution, shader, or texture setting, but I see some minor improvement when I reduce the draw distance to the minimum. My guess is that the game isn't processing the AI for characters or vehicles that you can't see. The patch that went out on the 23rd of January improved performance noticeably as well. I would think that your graphics card is easily enough for an enjoyable experience on all these games, but GTA 4 is an entirely different animal when it comes to required processing power.

Slitherydee, i'd think your system should run GTA4 just fine, with decent settings even. Have you gone into the menus and disabled the "always record replay" setting?(or something which sounds similar). I got a huge boost in fps from that setting being disabled.

edit: i'm on a c2d e6600, 6 gigs of ram(only 3 utilized by vista), gtx260. After switching the setting it went from unplayable to fluid.
