I still use winamp heavily... just basically because it does what I want it to do and how I want it to do it...

When I do online broadcasting you've got to have winamp in order to get shoutcast going... so there.

I've been using Winamp 2.91 for MP3s and CDs forever it seems and tried almost every progs mentioned at here but found nor reason to change!

I really don't get foobar, yeah it's less bloated then winamp... but winamp only uses 15 - 20 megs AT most of ram. I have a gig and the features of winamp - easy to skin, lots of plugins, beautiful search feature, ipod integration, etc - make me not care that foobar consumes 1/2 the ram.

In iTunes can you change the default output data format and output method? All my music is uncompressed wav and I like to listen to it unbutchered (bit perfect playback). When you have a nice audio system you can really tell the difference.

I use winamp and it plays to my 4.1 system perfectly fine. Mirrors the sound to the rears nicely. No plugins. It has worked this way on multiple sound cards and multiple speaker systems. I suggest you check your sound card an speaker settings.

actually, I just noticed my rears had stopped, thanks to your post. I found two fixes...

1. in winamp preferences under output, select directsound instead of waveout
or
2. Open waveout preferences (configure) and in the device dropdown, instead of Microsoft sound mapper, select your sound card

I googled it and found that 2.91 needed an ACR? plugin to support surround.

Plugins -> Output -> DirectSound -> Configure -> (Choose your soundcard) -> (Select Hardware Accleration).

I only get sound from 4.1 of my speakers though. The center channel is muted. Its the same in iTunes or WMP though too.

You can buy 5.1 surround sound plugins for winamp 5. I was pretty sure that 2.xx had it built in though. I am also wanting surround.

Cant change songs with keyboard unless the window is activated. I can use my |<< >>| keys on my logitech keyboard to switch songs in Winamp, not in Foobar.
Takes a long time to load a directory of songs. Took 10 seconds foobar vs. almost instant in winamp.
When on Random, clicking next doesnt go to another Random song.

My method works..

meh, I like using my rear speakers, so I have it mirror and fade the sound.

that's right about how I feel after having tried Foobar.
