I'm still here. I was around for quite some time when AnandTech was still using the Ultimate Bulletin Board, it was called the "AnandTech BBS" back then.

Those were really the good old days. I remember all the Cyrix/AMD/Intel flamewar threads, plus there was just so much more great stuff all over compared to now. We had kickass trolls like Guy Under The Bridge (GUTB) to keep us entertained with his zealry (that word make sense?). There must have only been 5-10k members back then! Now there's what, 90k or so?

I think I had some different handles back then... This is the one that has stuck the longest so I still use it. I enjoy reading the posts from "old timers" that have remained, cause they tend to be more well thought out and more entertaining to read compared to most "new" members. Although I consider myself an old timer, I don't put myself on the same level as most of the other old timers, as I never really contributed to the forum, was really just a person that drifted along for the ride and never made many useful comments. Like this post for example

Anyway, I'm out.

<< Well lets see here:
When I first started posting here:

They used UBB
The "hot" setup was a Celeron 300 at 450- some wild folks were claiming they could get 500!
Russ had written the Celeron O/Cing guide (that one may still be in the archives)
Cyrix was a reasonable alternative
The AMD K6 was a OK processor- too bad you can't clock it- if you got a extra 25-33 mhz you were really pushing it!
A big topic was over 75&83 mhz FSB- would my HD handle it?
There was a 2-3 month period where every other post was about Buy.com- and it's misprinted price on 17" monitors on it's website. Too many were ordered and those who didn't get one was royally PO'ed- I believe Russ referred to them as "Wounded Monitor Children"
>>

Ahahah... yeah, that was the good stuff. I remember using my Cyrix 6x86MX PR200 and Cyrix MII-300! They indeed were a reasonable alternative. I still remember playing UT at 1024x768 with my Cyrix and Banshee. I actually thought 10-25fps was close to playable. Oh boy how I was so very very wrong. These days I'd be dammed if I got that bad in 1600x1200

Using the 83 bus was good back then. Probably better than 100! Cause it OCed everything else, too. I remember being able to hit high stable OCs with 75 on the Cyrix, but 83 being a hell of a lot faster. Man, I just leave my Tbird alone and it's damn fast enough.

LMAO @ the mistake with Red Dawn's name! RED BARN!! Ahahahaha.

How can I forget when all the Family "something" forum folks took over HotDeals?

Remember when Ross "Sharky" span off to start SharkyExtreme(was he the first to start CPU pricing guide?), FiringSquad was still building its name with Thresh's quaking fame, and Tom's love of using "whilst"(He was the badass!).

a '99er myself.

Half of my current computer is still made up of Value America deals.

Hot Deals just haven't been the same.

Jeez, how many $10 coupons, no minimum, free shipping did I take advantage of (have I ever bought a blank CD?).

Was around when Tom's was the best
But i could never remember his website address, it was like sysop.pair or something
Was around before Sharky got bought.

Was around when coupon codes were fine, and there was no need for Techbargains.

And there were no [or seemed to be no] mods around

People used to post things for sale in the hot deals forum, that gave spark to the for sale/trade forum. I came in about the time Red Dawn did i guess, before the hot deals forum. Had a different user name back then though.

I still read the forums everyday just about. My post count with this user name is lacking since the young people took over the forum. Dunno when or why exactly but BOOM, member count jumped 200% and the adults were then outnumberd by the childen(Not all of them were children i guess, but they act like it). Too many self-proclaimed hardware gods, too many flame wars, too little tolerance, the list goes on.....I think it's a shame really. Things change, and so it goes.

How was that everquest rehab center golf?

Alice Hill And Bill O'Brian, Celeron Bashers - Eno 11-30-98 02:19 PM ET

LOL. I was a lurker back when this thread came about. Didn't really start posting until Oct of 99. Formerly, I rarely posted in OT. Mainly Hot Deals and General Hardware.

Yes, yes, GUTB. Who can forget. I think he came back under the name of Information for a brief period until a mod caught on.

How many remember Harvey and Tom Pabst going to battle? How about when there wasn't a Non Hardware General Forum (the predecessor to Off Topic) How about the First real Troll, Conan? I remember his Mother posting apologizing for her bedwetting rude little boy.I still think she's around. Maybe she'll stop in and say hi! Also How many remember Sgt Pepper? Sgt Pepper was NoWhereMan's first alias.

Those weren't the Good old days.In the good old days the trading took place at AGN where the elite Traders like CAK, golfreak, Blade ,VidmanII, Snelski, Big Hammer, Hammer among others started the ball rolling. Anandtech's For Sale Forum is one of the last Forums created at Anandtech.

Hey Chris, good to see you

I also remember Harvey and Netopia going at it like Cats and Dogs Then there was Rexbo and how about Fish??Jesus Loves youThe Non Hardware General Forum was created because of the Flames created by Fish Posting "God Loves You" in all the Tech Threads in the General Hardware Forum.
