Any other Hotmail Plus customers out there?

So I took the plunge and upgraded my Hotmail account to Hotmail Plus. 2 GB of storage, huge attachment allowances, the works... This was almost two months ago. Boy do I regret that decision. My refund period has expired as well. Just a fiasco all around. $20 I will never see again.

Don't get me wrong, the features are great. 2 GB is more than (albeit free) Gmail and is more than I'll ever need. I like that I can send, receive and store large attachments. I LOVE that i can use it with Outlook or Outlook Express without having to go through POP or IMAP. I like how there are no ads when I access it from a browser. BUT the service simply does not work where it really counts...

Within a week of signing up, I started experiencing delays with delivery of e-mails. Both outgoing and incoming. People were complaining they were getting my emails hours or days after I sent them. And then e-mail started arriving late in my inbox as well. Delays happened to random emails. I'd estimate one out of every six to eight emails experienced delays. This is almost worse than every email being delayed. It's not enough to quit using the service immediately but it's enough to seriously disrupt the flow of a conversation. One missing message can seriously confuse a dialog exchange! Delays ranged from hours to days. The record so far for me is an email I received 11 days after it was sent!!

So after countless dragged-out (of course) exchanges with Microsoft, they assured me they'd fix it. When the problems persisted, I should have filed for a refund but I got lazy and ultimately, I figured the problem would get solved sooner than later. But now here I am, out of my return period, and emails are still experiencing delays. Sometimes even worse than before.

The funny part is that I maintain 2 other free Hotmail accounts and they experience no problems. Though they haven't upgraded me to 250MB storage (that's another rant) yet, there are no delays associated with either of those accounts. But there are with my paid, VIP, upgraded, super duper account!

Ugh! I just can't believe I finally took the big step of PAYING for email and I got screwed over like this. I can't believe a company like Microsoft released an email service where the email part doesn't work properly! Then again, I suppose this is a company that released whole operating systems that didn't work like it should. Unbelievable. Needless to say, I will not be renewing my subscription to Hotmail Plus next year. What a debacle.

Just a word of caution to those out there thinking of making the jump.

I just got an e-mail from a friend this morning, with this time stamp "Sent : Tuesday, September 21, 2004 1:13 PM "
Ridiculous, something like a 40-hour delay

EDIT: BTW, I'm a free user, still at the 2 MB limit

Is your friend a Hotmail Plus customer?

If it worked, I'd have no qualms about paying $20 a year. It's worth it to me. But that's moot since it DOES NOT WORK!!!

I was tempted, but I already have 2 accounts, and a total of 7 invites.

Been using Hotmail forever now, I'm just not one of those types that likes change. Plus, Gmail doesn't sync with outlook (that I know of)

I just can't believe I took the jump of all jumps - paying for email - and got burned. If any poor souls out there were on the fence about this... don't do it!!!

I was <..> that close to coughing up the $20 for Plus, but then I heard about Gmail and then Hotmail made the announcement that they'd be upping the limit for all free users to 250 MB. Saved me a $20 bucks, but I'm still stuck at 2 MB

Is your free account always close to full? I wonder if Microsoft is delaying upgrading all the near-full accounts so some people will just get fed up and upgrade to the paid account. Even if they can get a few dozen people in the world to do that, that's extra business they wouldn't otherwise have. Perhaps that sounds a little paranoid, but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft.

mine was upgraded to 250mb a long time ago (2-3 months?) and i haven't had any problems.

if you're going to pay for email, i'd recommend mailsnare.net. great service, never had a question that wasn't answered within 3-4 hours, and the price is right.

Mailsnare seems more expensive than premium Hotmail or Yahoo. Thanks for the suggestion though. It does look interesting. The fear I have with these smaller services is that they'll go out of business or get bought out.

yea, that does sound a bit paranoid, but then again, this is Microsoft we're talking about

My account hovers around the 65-70% mark. I think the bar turns red around 75%, so when it does, I clean out the emails with attachments and stuff

I payed befor the 2GB so I would get 10mb
I've had my address for 5 years so I wouldn't change it, I don't think I'll pay for the 2Gb next time, but I've experienced no problems with it what so ever.

My normal hotmail (still 2 megs) has been really really slow, with delays ranging from 4-36 hours. I really only use it because my paypal, amazon and other services are tied to it and I don't feel like going through the hassle of switching them to my gmail account.

But I'm with Gurck on this one... you paid for hotmail????

I have six accounts (actually i have two, one business and one anon, the rest are for the kids and one spare), all web and pop combination accounts with unlimited box size, i pay for none of them.

If i WOULD pay for one it would make me feel dirty.

I really hate the fact that MSN is dragging their feet on the 2MB to 250MB limit increase. I get warnings I'm approaching my limit every other day.

So for damage control during GMail's intro.. MSN decides hey we will up ours too... in 5 months. :| Yahoo was great on follow-thru.

Well, look on the bright side: at least you can still get personal email on your AOL account.
