Popularity of hunting forms vary in large part on the terrain of the area. You're not going to find anyone hunting deer with bows in western Nebraska.

It was a 10 minute walk to the tree stand... downhill. Dragging a heavy deer uphill through deep grass is anything but easy.

And, I'd think a person could easily eat a deer by themselves. Not all in one sitting, but they invented this thing called a freezer. These two deer - all the back loins and tenderloins are steaks. All the rest is being ground into 95+% lean hamburg. Just waiting til my son gets here, then we'll cut them up.

Bro, do you even lift? People were carrying deer on their back before exercise was invented.

Black and white photo even.

Is bow hunting the in-thing right now? When did it start gaining popularity?

To me, the good thing about how hunting is that hunting has to take place at close range. The 600+ yard rifle shots (eg youtube) doesn't make 'hunting' sense and isn't humane since plenty of the shots would probably be off target and wound rather than kill.

A lot of "hunting" is a joke if someone considers themselves doing it for "sport". They feed the animals for half a year, then shoot them when they walk up to the feeder. They also have state of the art gear which would be the equivalent of the USA invading Haiti.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it, but don't call yourself a sportsman. At that point, you're just harvesting animals.

Figured this was going to be a bad year - no free time. Too many projects around the house. But, last night I decided, I'm getting out for at least a few hours today - first time out. Got a late start getting out of the house; finally out the door at 5am to hunt at my son's house. I got there just as he was leaving for work. "Too bad you're late. A six point just crossed the road, heading toward my stand." Gathered my gear, almost a 10 minute walk to the tree stand. As I got to the top and started turning around to sit down, holy shit, probably the same 6 point. 80 seconds of hunting and I was done for the day. Didn't lose the arrow either - went straight through the deer and stuck in the ground. Perfect shot. Son just called, he hunted for 10 minutes after work in the same spot. On his way here with another deer. 10 more tags between my sons and I; Saturday is the opening of rifle/shotgun season.

I was going to title this thread, "looks like I beat my meat..." bill.

Very nice. Well done.

Not deer, but I hunt a lot of birds. Pheasant, dove, goose, duck

Have only been out for dove and pheasant so far this year

After hunting in other countries where there are no laws about spotlighting I dont think I could ever hunt by sitting in a tree.

I haven't been hunting in years, but I've been meaning to go back out. Really would like to take up bow hunting, but since I've used a bow maybe once or twice, I should probably take up archery before that.

I like venison, but I hate hunting. The hunting itself bores me to tears and even if you kill something you have to dress it, which is a chore that often takes longer than the hunt itself. I know enough people who hunt and kill far more than they can eat to keep venison year round. I like eating it enough that I probably would do some hunting if I didn't though.

Harder to stay warm up there, that's for sure, but the view helps and it's nice not having to worry about bear or those vicious little javelina sneaking up on you while you're focusing on your kill zone.

I've always been more of a stalker, hunting or fishing, but sometimes the sit and wait method is best.

No offense intended, but I always thought spotlighting pretty lame. Seems so lazy and sleazy, like lulling bucks into complacency with months of salted corn from a timed dispenser. Like bows that are essentially as close to a gun as you can get without powder being involved. Ugh. Night hunting in general doesn't interest me much, although I would go on a wild hog round up given the chance.

Have you ever frozen a side of beef and slowly picked away at it?
The stuff goes bad long before you can gobble it up.
Self-defrosting freezers were invented by the frozen food companies as a way to cause food to go bad and have people throw out food (and buy more.) In a manual defrost freezer set to a reasonable temperature (-10F), most red meat will easily last a year before developing any off flavors, especially if in a shrink wrap package.

The same applies to bows - people should know where to shoot the deer to kill it. And, people should practice enough to know the range inside which they're deadly accurate. There's nothing from stopping someone from attempting a 75 yard shot with a bow - likely to miss or wound the deer, just as much as a rifle shot outside the range of the skill of the shooter, but inside the range of the bullet.

I know you're joking, but I'd love to have been able to carry it that way - piece of cake. I routinely pick up 3 or 4 50 pound bags of feed at a time for the farm, to carry over a distance. But, those feed bags don't have the risk of deer ticks carrying lyme's disease.

I've never seen a live wild skunk. I'll see them in the road on occasion, or smell them, but I've never seen a live one. I'd love to. They're cool little critters.

They are all over the farking place here, going trough garbage, spraying the neighborhood dogs, and getting hit by cars. They are like stinky explosive racoons.

why bother with camo at all?

I've done some armed hiking before. Paid for my deer tags but never even saw one. That was decades ago.

Never run one over in your car. It will reek, regardless of how much you wash it, for a good while. They are vile, repulsive creatures who enjoy tormenting mankind by spraying their stink all over everything!

The color isn't detectable by deer and is easily spotted by other hunters. Letting those guys, you know, the ones with the guns, know you're not a deer rustling in the brush is a good thing.

I hope you are not speaking from personal experience. I have managed to avoid them 100% of the time (as well as all the suicidal deer that jump out in front of my car.)

I have thrown garbage out at night and spooked them before though, but thankfully they have always fled rather than stinkbomb me.....

Neighbors dog has been sprayed though... it was not a fun time for the neighbors ....
