I've got an Athlon 2 x4 620, but I've overclocked and unlocked it to be functionally identical to an x4 955. I have no complaints. Might be about time to upgrade my video card, though.

I'm using an X2 555 - running at 3600 with just a minor voltage bump (+.05V.) and all 4 cores running.

This is on a work machine so I try to stay conservative with everything.

My most intensive use is with a Construction estimating and takeoff program that I use. Quite a few file conversions and some graphics involved. No real issues here, but I also haven't used a current Intel machine either to know what the differences might be.

No games on this machine at all so I can't speak to that aspect.

For my particular usage, the move into an all SSD machine has had much more of on impact than any other change I have made - including newer chipset's and CPU's.

so what i've read here has confirmed my assumptions, thanks guys. looks like AMD is fine for what i need it to do, and as long as i don't try to encode a direct rip of god creating the universe i should be fine.

I've got a Phenom II x6 1100T, and it works great for my needs, but I purchased it before the Sandy Bridge Intel's came out. If I were to buy a similar computer today, I doubt I'd go with AMD.

let me say don't ever feel pressure to upgrade anything as long as your uses and actual needs are being met.

tech stuff is all massively depreciating expenditures

Caught a sale at Microcenter for a 1055T & Motherboard for $150. I currently have it at 3.36Ghz, 1.2v Got 4GB of DDR3-1333 for $20, and it runs @ 1800Mhz with 9-9-9-24 timings with no voltage increase. Coming from an e6300 @ 2.8, this thing flies.

Phenom II X6 1090T here.

Most of the time, I have it at low Vcore (1.325 Vcore, but 1.25V CPU-NB) but overclocked to 3.8 GHz core, 2.6 GHz CPU-NB/"uncore", with only 3 cores running. Stays below 50C under all stress programs. I find this to be the perfect balance of having enough horsepower for most tasks (work and play) and power consumption and thermals.

When needed, I crank it up to be overvolted and overclocked to 4GHz core, 2.8GHz uncore, all 6 cores enabled.

When all I want is to have a very low power machine that I will leave on overnight like a torrent box (but still does not struggle with multiple firefox tabs and reasonable amounts of flash), I also have a low-power mode - only 2 cores enabled, 2GHz core and uncore, very low vcore (1.125V).

Thanks to the BIOS having 10 slots for profiles, switching "modes" is easy each time I boot, I don't fill-in the values manually each time (I had an MSI mobo that didn't support profiles in the BIOS; I hated it, sent it off to work to run a now-stock Deneb C3)

Simple question. If you own one, which version and how does it perform? Standard tasks like web browising/video watching and also gaming of course.

Reason i'm asking is because if BD dosen't look to be worth my money i might just go with the Phenom II's on account of me being poor. Thanks

Hey mate.

I have a Phenom II X3 720 BE, unlocked to X4 and overclocked to 3.5Ghz. It essentially performs as a Phenom II 970.

You can visit my Youtube channel and do a search in my videos for "Phenom". This should pop up all my Phenom videos (which are solely on the above cpu). These are camera recorded videos, showing pure performance in gaming benchmarks and custom benchmarks. My Phenom II is coupled with a GTX 460@850 Mhz and a Radeon 4850@725Mhz (I switch between the two for benchmarking reasons). The 460 at these clocks is essentially a bit faster than a GTX 560, so it will give you a pretty good idea of how it performs with a decent card.

Also at the end of the videos, I record the cpu usage and gpu usage, along with the frames per second result, so the viewer can get a more comprehensive idea, of what's what. Hope this helps!

Rig in Sig. Plays all games fine, such as GTA IV and Metro2033 as well as others. Might up the RAM to 8gb next Spring as Boinc seems willing to use up all 4gb if I let it.

Phenom II X2 560 and an ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3. I'm unlocked to 4 cores and have both the CPU and the CPU-NB overclocked to 3946 MHz and 2908 MHz respectively.

Leave your HTT low but please at least OC your CPU-NB to 2400 MHz if you are running 1600MHz RAM!

And if you do want to go the overclocking route like I did, please check out this list to be sure your motherboard's VRMs are up to task

i have a 965BE running 4.4 ghz

What kind of volts are you using to get it to 4.4? And the i3 sandy bridge performs better than phenoms in gaming and you'll notice no difference for browsing the web and watching videos.

x2 555BE @ 3.8ghz
Surfs the web and plays movies/music fine

Gaming wise it played WoW fine and runs Bad Company 2 ok but I think its a combination of CPU and Vid card holding me back. I don't have much hope for future game play-ability.

Got the cpu and a mobo for $99 at Frys. Mobo only supports up to 95w cpus so upgrade-ability is pretty limited in my case.

I just upgraded from a Phenom 9750 @ 2.4GHz to a Phenom II 940 @ 3.5GHz a couple days ago. My 4850 hold me back, but otherwise all is well.

You can't say this anymore.

Now that real quadcore gaming is arriving, the i3's cannot compete. The i3 2100 would perform a bit better, but it would still not touch the PhII X4's. It's quad or bust now-a-days.

may i ask what you are coming from?

and i have had ~ 5 phenom systems, and enjoyed every last one. Haven't needed to upgrade for performance reasons for a couple years.

2006: core2Q 4 * 2.8ghz on 65nm
2010: core i5m 2 * 2.4ghz on 32 nm

i've never used amd at all, (except for a friend's terribad laptop) so this thread has been great.

A friend of mine has an PH2 965. I was going to move her on bulldozer.

She does a lot of VMWare tho, which requires REAL cores.. not bullshit hyperthreaded or wanna be hyperthreaded cores.

So BD isnt really the route for me, because im seeing an X6 beat bulldozer across all benchmarks with the same overclock in multi threaded applications.

You're not going to notice much difference from c2q to phenom. The C2Q has greater IPC and if you can overclock it, it will reach phenom II levels.

i have a sexy heatsink on my C2Q, so should i just upgrade the ram to 4 gigs and keep it around? right now it's got only 2, and it drags its feet

Definitely add ram. 2gb isn't enough for anything more than Basic usage these days

Description in sig. Runs great for me. Everything I have tried to play/run does so without issue. Is it slower than an i7, sure. But that doesnt mean it isnt fast enough to do what I do. I mostly just game on it, and create my Minecraft videos, which render plenty fast.

Phenom II are solid performers, yes they are old, ancient tech, but they get the job well done. You can get 60 fps in all games depending on the video card and settings, but it wont perform like a sandy bridge, but are still good, same goes for Core 2 Quad.
