Surely a Phenom II @ 3.4Ghz would be equivalent to my C2Q @ 3.0, so that's not too shabby.

Those BF3 bench graphs aren't too bad for the Q9550 at stock. My Q9300 has less cache, but is slightly faster in frequency, so it should be comparable. I don't have a GTX580 though, only a 460GTX 1GB OC. Still, should be playable, I think. Might get it.

i have a sexy heatsink on my C2Q, so should i just upgrade the ram to 4 gigs and keep it around? right now it's got only 2, and it drags its feet

Yea. I changed from a C2Q Q6600 at stock to an overclocked Phenom II 955 BE and I regret every penny I spent, since the C2Q can perform similar to the overclocked Phenom II when overclocked. And 4gb of RAM is the bare minimum these days. You should be good until the 22nm cpus.

X4 955 Black Edition C3 OCed @ 3.7GHz.
Pretty happy with the chip and for the price it delivers. I plya in 1080p res and most games are high settings with excellent FPS.

Can't complain!

Unless you need six cores, I would add memory and overclock what you have now.

X4 965 Black Edition OC'ed to 3.7GHz. I got the chip for free from a friend via Newegg and use it on a workbench rig. I added a 96gb SSD with Win7 installed on that and it just flies.
Boots up in 22 seconds, and feels much snappier than my Q6700@3.5 which is suffering greatly from OS bloat after 3 years.

The Q6700 is getting retired on Friday for a 2500k build. Sad to see it go, but it served me well.

I have a x3 720BE@3gig, XFX5770 1gig and 4gigs mem. I surf the net and play BF2 BC2 constantly. My mboard wont allow me to up the volts on my PhenomII so thats all I can get from it. I'm more than happy with the performance of my system. I have a Samsung 2330 I think and resolutions an features pretty well maxed and I am more than happy.

wish I could pin mod for higher volts or mod the mboard for it

my combination of bios and AMD overdrive is misreporting CPU speed, I shut off all AMD overdrive now, it is actually 4.2 GHz @ 1.55 volts

You can get a cheap 870 board with 8phase cpu vrm and overclock to hell and back. You may even unlock it to an X4 like I did mine.

Yeah same here. I was running Q6600@3,35 then AMD released Thubans 6 cores, 4 Ghz for everyone , future proof AM3 mobos that will surely run Bulldozer (according to common forum "knowledge" at that time).

It turned out mine can barely do 3,8 Ghz with some obscene voltages like 1,5 V (starting VID 1,45) and at those speeds diffrence to Q6600 was unnoticable and as it turned out 6 threaded performance in boinc was also far from amazing.

Fortunatly i just repaired that mistake and have nice 2500K running in my rig for few days already.
Even now with 4 cores at 3,7 and box cooler it pushes more points in Prime Grid that 6 amd cores @3,8 Ghz ever did

I also had a Phenom II X4 940 with AM2+ motherboard but the board burned out, so I upgraded to a Core i5 2500. With ripping my DVDs, there's about a 10 minute difference in favor of the Core i5. Overall, the feel is about the same with regular operations, which is a lot better than any dual core I've owned.

You can't say this anymore.

Now that real quadcore gaming is arriving, the i3's cannot compete. The i3 2100 would perform a bit better, but it would still not touch the PhII X4's. It's quad or bust now-a-days.
Almost for sure something is messed up with HT (hyperthreading) support and/or the threading needs to be fixed. Could be why the i7-930 is slower than the i5-760 too. It also doesn't make much sense that a E8400 is running 28 fps and a i5-760 is running 168 -- over 5x as fast. A dual core E8400 should be at least half as fast as an i5-760 -- which if the threading was operating properly would put it at ~ 84 fps -- a playable rate.

I'm thinking maybe wait for BD, if it's decent, get a OC'ing mboard that supports it and my x3 720 and run with the x3 720 overclocked to max while BD matures and pick up a used BD on the cheap. How badly BF3 drops my current system to its knees will be a determing up-grade factor for me. Not in a real hurry here

X4 955 C2 @ 3.6 no CPU voltage increase.
Not a problem if the game is threaded well. BC2 runs around 80-120+FPS at 19x12. The BF3 alpha was fine at 1050P 50 - 70FPS. I ended up being GPU limited with my GTX470 which rarely came down from 100% usage and didn't come close to limiting the PII. It ran around 75 - 85%.
All the other games I play are also fine and most likely above 60FPS if the game is threaded well. I'm thinking about getting a 1090T but just to future proof.

Running my X4 955 @ 3.6GHz on air. Chip can go higher I'm sure as I didn't try too hard to get it there, but I just set it and left it. Been there since I got it.

My next upgrade will most likely be bulldozer I suspect but I'm still waiting to see how that all turns out.

Not being in a hurry, is the best course of action mate.

I think your/our X3 720 will do fine in BF3, judging from the early alpha results. It seems to go heavy on the L3, of which an X3 is not stripped of. I bet it will hit 60fps+ easily.

1090T no complaints at all for any normal tasks. I feel like some games would perform better with a 2600k, but frame-rates are generally fine with graphic settings maxed out in the games I play. TBH, if I could back and buy it again I'd probably just go with a quad core Phenom 2, as the extra cores are rarely used, but it's been a great CPU still.

I've got a x4 955 running at 4.0GHz @ 1.38V, 8GB RAM, and a 6870. I couldn't be happier with this set up.

Awesome, golden chip FTW right there

My main rig used to have an X4 965 (C3 version) , it couldn't get to 4GHz even with 1.5V

Got an x2 550 unlocked to x4 B50 that has been running stable at ~3,5ghz since release. pretty happy with the bang for buck on that one not tried doing anything with voltage though, maybe it'll go higher?

New PII X2 555 BE. Unlocked the additional 2 cores (reads as X4 B55).
Right now, it has been running stable for 12 hours at 3.608 with multiplier at 18 and voltage at stock 1.425v.
Once I cycle through a couple F@H runs I'll fiddle with it a bit more.
For a $79 processor, I'm impressed.
