Any point in getting HDMI passthrough on my receiver?

I'm picking up a Vizo VO47LF next week and need to put together a 2.1 system w/ plans of eventually adding speakers to complete the set. I have been looking at the Onkyo 605 which can handle dual HDMI or the Sony SR800 (I think that's the model) that can do 3x HDMI. Since the TV is capable of handling 4x HDMI should I not worry about the HDMI aspect of the receiver and just plan on passing the digital audio out to it?

Thanks

Yes, because then there is a possibility you will never need to change inputs on your TV if everything goes through the receiver and is output via HDMI to the TV.

Sony STR-DG810 Audio Video Receiver

Would this actually extract the audio from the HDMI? So could I plug in my 360, HTPC, and Cable Box and then only have a single HDMI running to my TV?

I have the SR605, and a 3x1 HDMI switch going into it. Everything goes into the receiver/switch, and then the hdmi out from the receiver to tv.

No point in going straight to the tv with anything unless you don't care about the sound.

Just keep in mind that when you run everything to the HDTV on one cable, you wont be able to calibrate each source separately (assuming your TV supports that). Well behaved HDMI devices shouldnt have a need for that, but its something to think about.

I can't recommend a Sony receiver.

No receiver at that price level extracts audio from HDMI.

You're looking for the phrase "HDMI switching". The Onkyo 605 does hdmi switching.

No, Onkyo 605 Does HDMI Audio Processing. It even does the Uncompress True HD and whatnot audio formats. Its the cheapest (pricewise) receiver that does, but trust me its a sweet receiver.

The Onkyo 505 and 575 are the two that do HDMI switching and not audio processing. Also the HT-S800 and 750 home theaters in a box only do switching too.

The Sony STR-DG810 does audio processing.

Take a look at the Yamaha HTR-6060 (same as the V661 less dual zone).
I spent way too much time on avs looking into what receiver to get and ended up with the yamaha over the onkyo 605 and sony 810.

The Sony and Onkyo are level 4 receivers and the Yamaha is a level 6. You can get the Yamaha on amazon for $350 with free shipping.

I have the 605 too - so it's good to know that a 3x1 HDMI switch works with this unit. If Blueray becomes the only format, the 3x1 switch will give me a place to hook up another player.

"hdmi switching" means the receiver can pull the audio out of the hdmi cable.

"hdmi passthrough" when the receiver does not pull audio out of the hdmi cable.

I was saying no to the Sony, but I guess that was wrong, other sites list it as hdmi switching. Interesting, other sites list the msrp of the Sony at $499. The low $399msrp at jr.com threw me off, as well as no mention of hdmi switching, nor support of the advance codecs.

Ive always heard Switching and passthrough as meaning no Audio processing.

Then I have heard HDMI Repeater usually means audio processing. But you gotta love how much manufacturers change the lingo to confuse.

I just got a Vizo VO47LF this week. I am running everything HDMI to the TV and the Audio back to the receiver through the fiber optic cable.

I never had any problems with my 900ES.

Sony has had their better receivers, like some of the ES models, but with the amount of competition in the receiver market, I find there is usually a better option for the same price.
