Was watching doomsday preppers on natgeo and was wondering if we had anyone part of the prepper movement on ATOT.

I prep when I'm cooking from time to time. I seem to have taken over onion duty when my wife and I are cooking, so I always end up chopping up a whole bunch of onions.

Given your positions on gun control, I'm assuming this is bait so you can troll anyone who says yes?

And no I'm not. I backpack and shoot though, so if push came to shove I'd be more "prepared" than the average joe.

I'm intrigued and I've researched the prepper/survivalists life.

I got chased out of New Orleans to Baton Rouge by Katrina. Luckily, an acquaintance of a friend took us in for almost a week. She had enough in her home to keep a half dozen strangers fed and relatively comfortable for days without power. Since then I've always made sure to have something stashed away in case things get nasty for a few days.

We've got a big five gallon bucket in with our camping gear. All the stuff we'd need for about 3 days is in there or in the duffle bag next to it where I have my camping gear. Shelf stable food, duct tape, tarps, a cheap radio, batteries, list of emergency contact numbers (family, friends, doctor, banks), etc. There are 6 gallons of water in the closet too.

I already owned everything but the water, now I just store it all in one place. I'll pull stuff out if I need it for camping and toss it back in when I'm done.

Everyone should have a ham radio. During Katrina US Military and FEMA couldn't get any kind of communications, ham radio operators were the only ones with communications. In an absolute emergency, you can actually use the radio on ham frequencies without a license.

Kind of related...

One thing I figured out while evacuating from Katrina was that text messages are more reliable communication than using your cell phone during an emergency. While we were evacuating the highways were packed. Everybody was on their phones calling relatives and things so it was pretty much impossible to get a call through. Too many people on too many phones with too few cell phone towers.

Interestingly enough, text messages would go through just fine. We were able to get in contact with family to let them know what was going on even if we couldn't give them a call.

Forget the doomsday prepper stuff, just sign up at this forum and go from there.

Some of those people on the doomsday show are over the top. Like the guy on the first show, looked like he weighed 300+ pounds, had health issues, but was planning on working a farm? He would probably die from a heart attack the first time he had to dig potatoes or work a field by hand.

What is she going to do after she gets out of Houston? That is what I did not understand about her plan.

One lady planned on walking out of Houston Texas. As a last ditch resort walking is an option. But what are you going to do once you get out of Houston? Houston suburbs can span 20+ miles. On hwy 45 going north, its nothing but malls and shopping centers from the woodlands all the way to Conroe.

I liked the underground shelter the guy had built out of pipe. In my opinion, he and his family were probably the most prepared out of everyone.

I am preperred for about 3-4 weeks of survival if the crap hits the fan. I am not preperred how the people where on the shows for years of survival off the grid. My original preparation being in Southern California was for a earthquake. So I figure 3-4 weeks is a good number.

Texts are sent in the control protocols, not the voice bearer of the actual call. It's a single frame. This is why I always have a hardline - the standards for their uptime and resistence to natural disasters is pretty hardcore.

I do make sure I have enough food for 3-6 months and a good source of water and a means to drink it. Generators and fuel to survive two weeks without power and other fuel to cook if need be after I'm out of fuel. Along with good first aid.

Want to see all hell break lose? Large scale power outage for more than a day or two let alone a month (happened here). You'd be surprised at how many people simply don't have enough food to go more than a day or two. We're just a few large and long power outages from SHTF.

Day 1, all us preppers are out buying up all the gas we can or traveling somewhere that has power to pump it, hotels are now completely full
Day 2, people start to freak a little, crime starts to tick up, people start getting desperate
Day 3, people really start getting desperate as they are cold, tired, thirsty and hungry, shelters are jammed packed, crime starts to skyrocket

At least that's how it happened when we got a hurricane in KY. Some places were without power for a month. All kinds of undesirables were roaming the neighborhood and that's when I realized I didn't have enough ammo. This is also why I always make sure my home is near a large flowing body of water. My pool will be a good source as well.

this is the most common mis-step, not having a water source
and the easiest way to ensure good water, is a stream/river/spring
but it takes moving to the right home, so you have to be serious/realistic

the one prepper episode had a woman living in Houston and showed how she planned to hike out of the city etc etc. to me, if she was serious, she wouldn't be living in a large city, that is just suicide
