Any reason to get something OTHER than 80gb PS3?

If I only use it for a couple shooters (COD, BF) and Madden, do I really need anything bigger than an 80gb ps3? I'm looking on ebay and the used ones are going for around 125 or so in this range.

You take a big chance buying any used "fat" PS3, especially on Ebay. If it isn't a "repaired" YLOD unit, chances are good that it will go YLOD sooner than later. As far as HDD size, there is no reason to pay more for a larger hdd size PS3, it's cheaper to just replace the HDD with a larger 2.5" HDD.

Yeah, definitely go with a slim unit, they run cooler and also quieter.

EDIT: Space wise. It is fine YLOD-wise too, but I am specifically referring to HD space.

Repairs after the first year cost $149, so buying used is a real gamble.

FYI, many games use 4 GB - 8 GB as temporary space, and that 80 GB starts with about 70 GB free. So if you don't want to bother with uninstalling games the extra space has some slight use.

Brand-new units are $249 now with 1-year warranty, 160 GB space and a fresh, un-sweated-on controller. If you wait a few weeks for the Black Friday deals you might get a couple of bundled games or $50-100 in store credit added to the deal.

If you buy used, just get a slim and it should be ok... Assuming it was taken care of.... Kids tend to have nasty hands and don't bother wiping off the discs before putting them in the drive. Eventually that can cause problems. I've seen slims on Craigslist for $150 or so.

My personal opinion on this is that anyone is asking for trouble buying a modern, used console. You know, unless you get a used one dirt cheap or something. Like $50.

The established prices for these used systems is just not worth it.

One other to note...
If you look at a fat ps3, before you buy it, pay attention to the noise level. If its loud from the fans, don't buy it. If its quiet, you should be ok. Some of the fats had heat issues and that's the root of all the other problems. The noise level is an indication of this.

I have had a noisy/loud fat ps3 that die with a YLOD and a quiet one that works perfectly. Stay away from a loud one, period.

A good way to test it is to play a bluray disc in it for about 10-15 minutes. If the fans don't kick in crazy loud, then you're probably safe.

A slim will be safest. But I totally understand if the budget prohibits buying a slim. I bought my quiet fat used and it's worked flawlessly for a long time.

Sony has started selling downloadable ports of some PS2 games for $10 (not many yet though) so that's one less reason to get a PS3 - fat. This is addition to the HD remakes of God of War 1-2, Ico/Shadow etc.

PS1 game discs work on all PS3 models, you don't need a fat for them.
