Any recommendations for shop vacs?

Tired of paying $3-$4 bucks to go vacuum my car, looking for something with a lot of power, but never bought one before so...recommendations ?

I have a Craftsman 2.5 gallon shop vac that I've been quiet happy with. It's been running strong for going on 9 years.

I've had really good luck w/ a Craftsman Supersux 10,000 or whatever it's called. Vacuuming up cat hair, nails, broken glass, dirt, dust, more cat hair, rocks, even more cat hair, etc. works great. One thing about vacuuming cars is that the vacuum builds up static really fast so that I get continuously shocked the whole time I use it on the car. Some folks might enjoy it.

I have this one and love it. Wall mounted in the garage so it's like going to the car wash.

I recommend that you get the hose with the larger diameter. I had the same shop vac as a friend, except I had the (1 1/2 inch?) hose, he had the 3 inch hose. His was 10 times better than mine - I couldn't figure out why until I replaced my hose.

1) Ignore the HP ratings. They're all 110V which means you won't be able to draw more than, say, 12- or 15 amps.
2) Don't be tempted to buy a big 12- or 16-gallon one unless you really think about it hard. Remember: you have to store it somewhere when you're finished.
3) Sears used to sell a wet-dry vac that had an optional carpet cleaner attachment (think a poor-man's Rug Doctor).
4) Hose size matters
5) Most air filters are washable (use a garden hose). But buy an extra filter or two when you buy the vac just in case they stop making the filters later on...

I needed one for my shop and cars. I found that sears had the best price when they were on sale. So wait for a sale/coupon beofre you buy.

Also as arcas pointed out don;t go for the biggest one. Get one that will be the right size for you. I got a 16gallon higher HP rated one as i use it for my wood shop so it is being used as my poor mans dust collection system right now.

I don;t have that one. But from teh specs it looks liek it would do the job very well.

Best bet buy one and try it on your car. If it works, keep it. If not return it the next day.
