get the grado's there the best value you could possibly find, great sound quality at a decent price.. and don't get wireles.. most wireless cans sound like crap...

I picked up a set of Sony MDR-V700DJ's from Best Buy. They cost me $150 and I swear by them now. They are incredibly clear and have excelent bass response.

EDIT: Maybe I overstated a bit in my first post... I fixed it, but they still sound damn good

headphone preference is definetly personall and the only recommendation I would give, is take several of your favorite cd's with you and give the phones a test trial. Some folks prefer mids over base; others live for pure highs. Also consider whether you want phones that will completely cover your ears or just rest on top of them. Will you be using them with a home set up or portable??? If portable, make certain they have low impediance or else you won't have enough power to drive 'em.

and you will hear the difference between phones from Wal-mart versus a stereo store. If you're seriously into gaming or good music, don't scrimp here; with a good set of phones you'll hear music and tones that you've never heard before.

HeadPhone Try this link; it's not the best laid out site but the info is great and their products cover the very best there is. For my own style of music I have the Beyerdynamics DT250-80's, and just ordered a dedicated headphone amp from them. Good luck.

Sennheiser HD570

Google it and read the reviews, you'll have a hard time finding a bad one

I have the Panasonic RP-HT1000's. They're supposed to be around the quality of the Grados, but I would imagine slightly less.

If you're going to go with Sony, get the MDR-V6. Otherwise, I hear the Grado SR60 and the Sennheiser 495 are quite good.

If you are going wireless, DEFINITELY go Sennheiser. I bought a pair of RS-65 phones and I love them. The sound is great, and is perfectly clear within 50 feet, and I can still listen, although with a little static, on a different floor of my house.

The only thing is that I bought the phones with the built in DSP processor. IMO, it wasn't worth the extra money, and just seems to muddify the sound. I keep the processor unused though, which basically turns my set into a pair of RS-45s, which are the ones I'm recommending.

I second that! Best headphones under $60!

a "review on them"

<< Well, I'm not sure I'm qualified with my 36 year old ears to make a good comparison.

I've only been listening for about an hour, but I have noticed a couple of things.

The V6's are much more comfortable. The V600's are too large and heavy.

Soundwise, so far the thing that jumps out at me the most is the clarity of the instruments. I can see why some people say they sound analytical or technical. Personally, that is exaclty what I was looking for, so I am quite pleased here. The 600's did not have that clarity.

I'm having a hard time typing right now. I have "Crush" (DMB) hitting my brain from every angle. Strings over here, flute over there, snare right in the middle.

Anyway, the bass is a little lighter than the 600's, but much tighter. Able to be cranked without sounding muddy. The snare drum, and sounds in that frequency range seem very pronounced.

I spent $75 on these, and have seen them for $55. How can you go wrong at that price? I'm tempted to buy another pair.

Also, these are easily driven by a Soundblaster Live if anyone cares.

It will take me while to run the gammit from metal to strings and see how everything sounds. So far, I very pleased.

I wish I had known about these before I bought those V600's. Thanks to this board, I now have the sound I was looking for.

Thanks All.

I totally love my Grado SR60s. I am still in Hawaii - the last 3 months - and ONLY listening on headphones . . .

The Grados sound superb on my notebook and portables for music, DVDs and even gaming.

I would say Grado SR80 or 60, I own both the 60s and Sony mdr-v6. I like the sound of the MDR-V6, but overall the Grados are more comfortable, and sound a lot better.
