Any recommendations on speakers for smaller setups? (gaming)

I'm in need of some recommendations for speakers or speaker systems (no headphones) for a new gaming rig that's being built, but the catch is that space is very limited. A cheap Walmart 2.1 system is being used at the moment and even then it's a bit obtrusive with the sub under the table. I've heard people recommend soundbars, but I have no experience with them.

I'd like to get something that will match the build, otherwise, having all the fancy hardware will be rather pointless if you can't hear what you're seeing.

Any input is appreciated.

if its from a pc, they will need to be powered
audio engine has some that are well reviewed
klipsch makes a set for pc

but good subs are big. you have to decide what the max size is if you truly want 2.1, or if 2.0 is good enough

Yes it's for a PC. I'd rather she just settle for a decent headset like my Tiamat 7.1, but she's pretty intent on speakers. I'll check out the Audio Engine and I have heard Klipsh recommendations in the past so they must be doing something right.

Seems there's a lot of Klipsh speakers on sale at Newegg (some up to $250 off), but none of them appear to be useful for gaming.

I might even grab the floor standing or the bookshelf for myself and see how they fare, and if they can be converted to use for a PC, I'll just use them for the new build.

If it's for a computer ideally you want shielded computer speakers and positioned appropriately on the desk. They have computer speakers, the ProMedia 2.1. Very high quality stuff and LOUD.

Yes. Unless you plan to output sound to a receiver from your PC then you will need PC speakers. Or powered speakers but Just buy the Klipsch Pro media 2.1 and you will be very pleased. I have owned the pro Media 4.1 years ago and it lasted many years providing rich beautiful sound. I've listened to the 2.1 system by Klipsch and they still sound fantastic.

If you are not looking to use a receiver, then get the bose companion 5. Otherwise a good receiver paired with the likes of http://www.whathifi.com/q-acoustics/3020/review would be good. Going with any smaller speakers would require a sub. I managed a 2.1 setup using Q Accoustics 3010's but it wasn't quite as ideal as REAL sub woofers do not boost MIDs what so ever which is different than most PC speaker setups where small satellite speakers are paired with a sub that can also help cover mid range frequencies.

The best "mini" speakers on the market (500 cubic mm range) are the Ascend Acoustics Luna ($1400), and Dynaudio Contour SR ($1800, street price at most dealers around $1000-1200). Assuming you eventually go down the audiophile path...haha

Just like everybody else, the Klipsch can be had for $99 on sale. You can put the sub elsewhere.

But if this is just for gaming and you can't do a true 5.1, I would seriously consider headphones.

psst... pro's use stereo earbuds for their sound for good reason. 5.1 headsets are rubish.
