Any recommendations on winter jackets?

I'm looking for a sporty looking winter jacket, but not one of those 3 in 1 with the polar in them thats always coming out. I'm looking at spending around 400-500$.

Anyone have sugestions on make/models?

Current jacket I have, has a removable polar jacket, it zips out, and you can wear just hte jacket, just the polar jacket, or both. I find its a pain, since I never wear them sepertly.

goretex is more like a technology that is used in jackets, i don't think they make any jackets of their own

I think they do.
I've seen GoreTex brand.
I like Northface. They're kinda expensive, but their warranty kicks ass and the jackets designs are sweet.

Id say Marmot or Columbia both make good jackets that are affordable, you missed out on cheap jackets by now, I would check for a new jacket around March for the following year

I like my big leather, duster-ish coat. Heavy as hell, waterproof, fairly tough (no tears yet), and it has a zipout liner - not that I've ever needed it. Cost like $250 or something. Never had one of those sporty synthetic jackets you're talking about though so good luck finding one you like

:roll: do you guys even know what goretex is for? it is a waterproof, breathable membrane. you do not need it in the city - unless you are going to be using it while hiking or some other more physical activity (walking does not count). goretex does not make a jacket warm; it does nothing other than being waterproof, breathable, and more expensive. there are many cheaper alternatives to goretex on the market.

Gore licenses its use to companies who then proceed to incorporate the membrane into their jackets. gore ONLY manufactures the membrane. it does not make any end-user products.

i would get something like a NF nuptse down jacket, and then some random hardshell to put over it when it is windy, or if precipitation is in the forecast.

its can also be wind proof, which is GREAT for a city in the winter, just get a shell from anyplace and wear it over a sweater or whatever

WHOA that's a truckload of money. I don't know about you guys, but in the past I just hit Burlington Coat Factory and grab the best looking $50 one that I can find (though now I've been able to con myself into a free coat from the athletics department at school. Biggest, warmest jacket I've ever encountered and has my name on it and everything, and should have cost a mere $100)

well windproof is pretty much implied when something is waterproof.

personally my colder-weather setup is based on layers:
first layer is a marmot windshirt. second is a generic 100weight fleece. if it is really windy or rainy, i put on the rainshell which is a "Tempest" jacket by sierra designs (uses a waterproof breathable coating, similar to goretex in end result).

if it is really that cold then i mix and match with my golite six month night - a serious winter insulating piece, built with two layers of polarguard3d (think of a down equivilent that is synthetic). dont need a rainshell if it is that cold.

all of that doubles as my backpacking equipment, and is light as heck. the heavy parka is something like 1.5lbs and total weight of the first setup is less than 2lbs.

US Navy issue Pea Coat. Nothing warmer. You'd even save a few hundred dollars for other things.

 

Eastern Mountain Sports (if you have one in your area) makes an awesome shell + fleece model for about $250 total (on sale in February of 2003)...GoreTex XCR. It's awesome. I'm going on my third winter with it, and I wouldn't trade it for any other coat in the world.

Both of mine are blue. Best jacket I've ever owned.

Get an Obermeyer. I have one. It is warm in like -40 windchill, water resistant, it is the best jacket. Better than Columbia or north face
