I just installed Suse 8.1, Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 8.0 on my thinkpad 600. Suse comes with the Mwave driver included as an RPM that I can select when installing, it works perfectly. For Mandrake, I used the open source Mwave driver from IBM (version 1.0.2) and it works perfectly. But for stinking Red Hat, it won't compile correctly. Keeps telling me that I have compiled for a different kernel than I currently am using. This is despite the fact that I indicated the kernel source directory as an option to the ./configure command. I tried to load the modules, and it won't complete an insmod even with the --f option. I know the driver works because of my experience with Suse and Mandrake, so why doesn't it work with Red Hat?? Any thoughts?
I did a Red Hat "desk top" install in order to check out their new format. It is a shame that this driver doesn't work. It seems to be a trend with Red Hat though. Whenever I have tried to install from sources on a Red Hat system in the past (like the ALSA packages) I always seem to get these kind of mysterious errors that I don't get with Mandrake or Suse.
As a side note however, I think that noobs will like it, especially if someone is just looking to replace windows for web browsing and simple office type stuff. It is very slick and very simple to understand until you run into a piece of non-supported hardware. It probably is everyone's cup of tea (especially linux purists), but it is probably a huge step in the right direction for the goal of finding a windows replacement for my grandmother or joe sixpack.
