Any reliable place to buy an iPad 2 screen outside of eBay?

My wife has finally done it. She's broken the iPad's screen. Problem is, I just can't see myself throwing this away (it's a 64GB model). Where can I get a replacement and what do I need to replace the glass? I'm assuming that, unlike a laptop, the lcd panel is recessed behind that glass and bezel, right? I don't have an eBay account and don't want to get one. If push comes to shove, how much will Apple charge to fix the screen?

We have Dell Latitude 10s at work and those are easy to open up. Is the iPad anything like that?

apple products are very hard to open up and replace anything. I think they'd charge you 100 dollars to replace the screen.

Oh yeah? That's not so bad. Do you mean the glass or would they have to replace both? I don't see any bleeding.

There are several screen replacement services on ebay that will do it parts and all for around 60 or so, I have used one and it was fine. It is worth making an account

There's one in Midtown manhattan not far from where I live that fixes it while you wait. If Apple is only a $100 and this place is cheaper then I may go that route. My wife only watches videos on that thing but I'd hate to ship off such an expensive equipment to someone I don't know.

Although there is nothing to add in the Latitude 10s, the backs are extremely easy to remove. I can't believe you have to microwave crap just to fix an iPad. Ridiculous.

lo and behold, she broke her smartphone as well today. Unfortunately, it's her personal phone and not the corporate one. I am determined to fix this one. The iPad I will not touch but this ZTE 9810 I will take apart.

Might I recommend getting her a cheap dumb phone and a sub-$200 tablet. The dumb phone for durability, and the cheap tablet so you won't be out exorbitant amounts of money for the next klutz moment.

The iPad was given to her by her pops. I would never waste that kind of money on a tablet. Also, she got a 2013 Nexus 7 in July.

I got the ZTE N9810 digitizer but there is no disassembly video online. Nothing on XDA as well. Any way to check Chinese sources?

Don't think they work on Virgin. Besides, I like to solve problems and enjoy tinkering. So far I've managed to open up the phone and take out the motherboard. But I have no idea how to take out the broken screen. The replacement screen (digitizer) is clear but the one on the phone is black so that means that there's something behind it. I'm at a critical stage now and don't want to muck it up.

I feel your pain... My wife dropped her iPhone, breaking the screen and I got her a replacement from the apple store for $175 dollars. Like 5 days later she dropped the new one and broke it too. I about murdered her

wrt the ipad, i would just take the money youd spend repairing that and get a new ipad mini. a new ipad 2 on black friday is only 299, youd probably pay 150-200 to replace the screen with parts and labor

She has a Nexus 7 so an iPad mini is out of the question. Her iPad is the 64GB model and she's content with the broken screen (it's mainly around the edge so it doesn't affect the screen too much).

To answer your earlier question, my wife has a light touch. She never grips anything so they end up slipping out of her hand frequently. That is why she is on Virgin with their cheap plans and cheap phones.

It sucks... I recommend getting an otterbox or lifeproof case with the new device too. I got her a new pink otterbox for her newest iPhone and she has kept it in there and safe so far

those cases dont totally work, even if you dont crack a screen you can still get black dots after dropping with otterbox

I had my old iPad 1 glass screen replaced at local repair shop for less 100 buck. It looks like new iPad rather than fix it by myself.

Apple store will swap it for a refurb for a price. Probably between $100-200. Not very cheap, but very easy.
