Hi there!

Okay, here is my story. I need some advice please!

I have been running for about 7 years. Some months it is more than others, but you get the idea. Anyhow, for the last 6 months or so, I have been pretty regular, running 3 miles in roughly 30 minutes every day. I could do this with ease. I was not totally exhausted at the end and felt pretty good.

My problem:
For the last week, I cannot run for more than 10 minutes without nearly blacking out or being completely unable to breathe. So, I run for 10, walk for 10 and I do this twice. At the end, I am totally exhausted.

I am a nurse. I am NOT sick. I eat great and considered myself to be in great shape. My blood work is perfect (I have to get it done for other reasons). I am not overweight or underweight. I am female. I also take a multivit.

Any ideas out there?
Thanks!

I'm a runner, but I'm completely blank as to why this would be happening.

how old are you? Did this come on suddenly, or was it sorta gradual? In other words; did it just so happen that one day you couldnt run more than 10 minutes? Or did you feel yourserlf getting tired as you ran, and it eventually culminated in this?

Where are you running? Could it be caused by the cold weather? I know when I run and its like 40 degrees or colder, I find it hard to breathe. That would be my best guess.

Something so sudden sends off warning flags. Nurse or no, I'd seek the advice of your doctor. There might be some underlying problem not readily visible.

I am almost 25. I think it is a combination of mental fatigue and perhaps even lack of motivation.

Azraele: Doctor says everything is great. That is what meant when I said I was healthy. They blood work and it was fine! Nothing physical anyhow.

Just wondering if otherrs have hit a block like this before. Perhaps that was all my body was capable of doing!

I did come across this at some stages when I run also. Its just to do with the mental thinking and your thinking. At times I was really up to run and others I was less motivated. If you push yourself and push harder and harder you will do it. You just MAKE YOURSELF run and do it. But I never came to close to blacking out though, just out of breath at times.

Some days I could run further and faster and others it was not as good. Just think of something positive (so nothing to do with skoorb then) and focus on it and if it makes you happy then just run........

When I was still doing HEAVY weight training last year, I ran into simular problems. Sometimes, for weeks at a time, I would lose all stamina and my Ability to work at it was useless.

The Solution: I switched from lifting every other day, to 3 times a week, monday thursday and sunday.

If I were you, I would cut it back to every other day, and if that doesnt work, knock it to 3 times a week.

Let me/us know how it works out

its all a state of mind... when you think you can't run anymore, and can't breathe, keep going

two things can happen
(1)- you keep going, and it get better
(2)- you kill over

i have recently started training for a marathon, and having done a lot of research, would have to say that nutrition has a *lot* to do with your endurance. try to eat a meal high in carbohydrates 2 hours before you run, as well as drink water, or a Gatorade or PowerAde before/while running. just my 0.02.

Hmm, very odd. Everyone goes through their bad days and good days, but this seems taking that a bit far. Have you been running consistantly before this week? Do you run daily or schedual several days of the week? And just how regular? Have you been doing it on a strict routine or just whenever you can find the time and energy to get up and go?

Do you have allergies? Some times sinus pressure can cause problems. I have been running for about 15 years and have noticed winter time for me i get alot of aches and pains vs not as much in the summer.

You should try running to military cadence, it will help to get your breathing in the proper flow. Works for me anyhow.

One other thought may be you are to tired to begin with, I've had trouble running the next day if I have been up with sick kids and lacking enuf sleep.

this happens alot to me as well, well not really the blacking out part, but the trouble breathing while working out. The prob for me is that i was burnt out from running (the same routine over and over) from pushing myself too hard. The best thing to do is to take about 2-3 weeks off and do some cross training or different activities that work out the body ie swimming, weights, skiing, etc. then start back up slowly and work your way up till you feel comfortable again...

Thank you so much guys!

I run on a treadmill mainly and I am or was until now, running every day. It is pretty cold here in Eastern Canada to run outside and my lungs are not fans of being cold!

I think I will just adjus my routine as mentioned and see what happens...and drink lots of water. I hate hitting a block like this.

Thanks again guys, in a few hours I will try it again. *sigh*

DO NOT cut take 2-3 weeks off of running if you want to hold any time you have now. Do a Mon-Wed-Fri-Sat type thing, that gives you ample rest and won't ruin your time. On every other day, I agree to do some other physical activity, especially swimming and spinning. Might want to wear a heartrate monitor if you're really concerned too.

I think I will do every other day. I have monitored my heart rate before and for the life of me, I cannot get it above 120 or so. Resting, it is around 50-55. I have a slow heart!

I did 20 minutes today. God this is pathetic. I was once able to do 30 no problem.
Oh well, guess I will ease back into it easily. Perhaps the air and altitude is different here than Alabama....
