Curious about how the 3600X does with it's boost and overclocking. I've seen reviews but not too many threads about the 3600X and if it's getting close to 4.4GHz

To me the 3600X is like a 3800X binned chip with either 2 cores that are disabled or that are weak, as it's base clock is 3.8Ghz and it's boost is 4.4GHz..

Can't say that I've seen my hit 4.4GHz since I updated the BIOS.
I've not put it under any great load yet, and my boosts tend to go to 4.275GHz.

From the benchmarks I've read 3600, 3700X, and 3900X are the sweet spot from performance, performance/price, and performance/watt perspective.

3600X and 3800X may be better binned, but they are clocked way beyond their optimal frequency point, you gain 5% performance for way hotter and way power hungrier chip. IMO 3600X and 3800X are absolutely not worth it.

It doesn't look like it offers much of a performance gain compared to the 3600.

I'd lean towards the 3600, but if the budget allowed purchase a 3700x.

That 3700x will probably be one of AMD's best sellers this generation.

Hmm. I'm planning on doing a 24/7 all core overclock. Maybe the 3800X would be the best chance for the highest clock @ 1.275v. Strickly a gaming machine

By dud you mean a 1700 that wouldn't hit 4GHz all core?
If so, you'd be looking at 10-15% higher clocks, 15% higher IPC, bucketloads more cache, UMA, and much more scope for better RAM.
3.8 Ghz at best(so just left it with Auto setting) and was not aware that first gen Ryzen were NUMA? I think 3600X are about even with dud 1700s in MT and leave them in the dust in ST

Would it be a side grade at best going from a dud 1700 to a 3800X?
When I said they aren't worth it, I meant compared to 3600/3700X.

Compared to 1700 3700X is going to be roughly 30% faster all around, even faster than that in tasks involving AVX-256. All around decent upgrade if you don't mind spending the cash. 3800X is not worth it though because it's only 5% faster than 3700X while being priced 25% more than 3700X, plus it runs way hotter than 3700X too.

If you want to upgrade your 1700 go for 3700X.

Any chance of getting a 3700(non-X) Ryzen? The 1700 was really a good deal at the time compared to Intel 8 core HEDT at the time, it basically made 8 cores mainstream.
I wouldn't count on it. AMD never made a change to 1000 lineup and it never made a change to 2000 lineup. There is no reason to believe they'll make a change in their 3000 lineup. AMD has solid range of products covering every price point, I seriously doubt they'll be introducing new Zen2 SKU.

The X no longer means anything.
For 1st and 2nd gen it referred to XFR, which is by now a pretty standard functionality of PB2...which all 3rd gen utilise.

Edit: you could say that the 3700X is is the non-X version of the 3800X.

The 3600x at around $200 USD is a steal! I've only used the 'safe' overclocking, but it definitely gets above 4GHZ while being absolutely stable. An odd thing about it though is that it seems to idle hot (around 45-50C with a Corsair H80 liquid cooler) but when overclocking it only gets up to around 60C. So definitely ditch the stock Wraithspire that comes with it, but I feel like I got my money's worth on this one, and maybe later on I'll upgrade to a 3950x when the price comes down a bit.
