Colour laser have horrible toner prices and most of them are average in performance Does she print colour?

Look for third party toners and see how much per page it comes to.

My mother has an epson 5050 printer and to be frank, she prints like crazy. But she only lives on about 800 a month so the sheer number of name brand ink cartridges she's buying constantly at Walmart is taking its toll. Does anyone have any experience in ink cartridge refilling kits? Are they worth it or are they just a disaster waiting to happen?
Laser printer for Christmas is an idea.

Link me to a printer with cheap refills and I'll take a look. I don't know what I'm going when it comes to printers so I ask those that do.

Here's just a regular laser printer.
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-imageC...480012122&sr=1-1&keywords=canon+laser+printer

Refills are eBay for the #125 cartridge. This is a 2 pack.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pack-125-...676010?hash=item4189cb4baa:g:nogAAOSwmUdUVTZH

As you see the Canon cartridges themselves are very expensive:
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-Original-125-Toner-Cartridge/dp/B00MFNXKDY

Now here's an all-in-one for not a lot more money.
It will copy, scan, print, fax:
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-imageC...480012122&sr=1-3&keywords=canon+laser+printer

The cartridges are the Canon #137- for one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1PK-Canon13...872164?hash=item3ac11af3a4:g:ud8AAOSwsN9XButg

This is a two pack:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2PK-Canon13...394693?hash=item3d1613b285:g:ScsAAOSwGYVW~dRJ

Personally I like the Canons. Cartridges are abundant and cheap and the printers are inexpensive. I like the all in one's ability to make copies and use the scanner. The document feeder is useful for making pdf's from whatever paper files your have. I have had the MF4770 for the last few years and the last Canon all-in-one I had lasted 8-10 years. (I can't remember that model number)

Here's the list I chose from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_11?url=search-alias=electronics&field-keywords=canon+laser+printer&sprefix=canon+laser,electronics,271&crid=23U1UCOVVSG2Z

Here's a Canon that uses the #126 cartridges:
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-imageC...480012122&sr=1-5&keywords=canon+laser+printer

Here's the eBay price for the Cartridge:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1PK-CRG126-...471256?hash=item2815cd59d8:g:G7MAAOSwz2lXC14m

2 pack:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pack-Gene...BP6200d-/171523162928?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
3 pack
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Pack-Gene...BP6200d-/181573121011?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
4pack
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Pack-Gene...BP6200d-/171523334995?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

Point of all of this is whatever Canon laser printer you choose, there will always be lots of vendors selling cheap cartridges. And these are new, OEMs, not refilled cartridges

for my printer

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-High-Yiel...hash=item43f3104269:m:mYF0Co-JaOX-wwtx12kIdnw

that is 4x 8,000 page toner for 42 dollars...

single, 12 or so

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Compatible-...489537?hash=item416623b1c1:g:14AAAOSw-itXv~OC

Colours are more expensive because they are small but still need a container.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brother-MFC...sh=item360d653ddf:g:SNgAAOSwiONYNdOq#viTabs_0

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5PK-TN336-B...713428?hash=item4b01fa1394:g:pwQAAOSw-4BXZGvV

all three colour plus two black toners 60.45, I didn't look for the cheapest one, just the first ebay link

The colours are 3.5k rated, black is 4.5k. And these are the high yield toners.

Looking to get a cheap and small B/w laser. This is for at most 400 pages a year. Was looking at 2 models.

Canon LBP6030w I was going to
get this one until I saw the depth is around 17" with the paper tray open.

Brother HL-L2300D Depth here is only 14" which is more acceptable.

Any reason not to get the Brother? The Brother has a separate Drum good for 12,000 pages but that should last over 5 years.

The only thing I wonder about is if ether of these printers or laser in general have issues with after market cartridges. Just looking for compact, cheap, and basic light printing. Any advice?

1) Buy printers according to refill costs, not the printer cost. A $25 printer with $50 refills is a worse deal than a $75 printer with $15 refills. Spend more up front to get lower consumable costs.

2) Switch as much printing as possible to a cheap laser rather than using an inkjet and apply rule #1 to the laser purchase too.

3) Watch for printer deals. You can sometimes find inkjets that are being sold for way way less than the cost of the refill cartridges. i.e. Here's a Canon at Adorama for $18 delivered http://www.adorama.com/icamg2520.html with the ink cartridges. Replacement cartridges are about $40 for a set. Do the math. Buy a couple of really cheap printers and throw them away when the ink runs out rather than worrying about refills. Just get a new $20 disposable printer every six months.

Brother toners are cheap. Like four high yield (2600 page) for 24 dollar cheap on ebay. Never had issue with third party toners on my 8840DN. And if you only print 500 pages a year, that drum is going to outlive your desire to uae that printer. Like twenty plus years.
