Sorry, are you looking for a recommendation for a specific 4 core 8 thread CPU or are you asking whether 4 core 8 thread CPUs in general are suitable for gaming?

Only AMD makes 4 core 8 thread CPUs right now as far as I am aware. I think Intel only makes 4 core 8 thread CPUs for the laptop market.

I would not buy a 4 core CPU for gaming anymore. Mid-range CPUs (i5s and Ryzen x6xx) are all 6 cores now. I'm sure a 4 would do fine in most games for a few years as long as you're not too picky, but I certainly would not call them "best".

Well that was the case back in 2013, which is why at the time I pick the i5-4670 over the i7 options. Now, aren't most modern games better at using more threads? Of course If I was building a new rig I would choose a 6c/12t processor.

Core count and thread count are not the only determining factor in a CPU's gaming performance. When you're buying a CPU you shouldn't be picking based on core count/thread count, you should be picking based on benchmarks of the applications you are wanting to run.

With that said, I probably wouldn't recommend any of the current 4c/8t processors on the market right now, simply because they aren't optimal choices. i7-7700K is outdated now (if you're in that price bracket just buy the 6c/12t i7-8700K) and the Ryzen 5 1400/1500X/2400G are all too close in price to the Ryzen 5 1600/2600 and i5-8400 to be worth it - the 1600 and 8400 perform notably better and only cost $10-$20 more so just buy those.

Which have been replaced by 6c/12t CPUs for the same cost. So unless you are building a basic/budget PC, then why bother with having only four cores?

I would buy 2400G or R5 2600X.
Not R5 1400 or R5 1500X.

+ OC with lower voltage.

+ less power
- TIM on 2400G (it doesn't matter if you OC only CPU)
