Core count and thread count are not the only determining factor in a CPU's gaming performance. When you're buying a CPU you shouldn't be picking based on core count/thread count, you should be picking based on benchmarks of the applications you are wanting to run.
With that said, I probably wouldn't recommend any of the current 4c/8t processors on the market right now, simply because they aren't optimal choices. i7-7700K is outdated now (if you're in that price bracket just buy the 6c/12t i7-8700K) and the Ryzen 5 1400/1500X/2400G are all too close in price to the Ryzen 5 1600/2600 and i5-8400 to be worth it - the 1600 and 8400 perform notably better and only cost $10-$20 more so just buy those.
