Any tips for Cancun visit

Planning to Visit Cancun for the first time, any tips/ideas about where to get the best deal and places to stay.

Also check to make sure if the ice cubes are made with spring water or tap water. If you don't, Montezuma's Revenge will 0wn your ass. (literally)

Don't you mean make sure they AREN'T made from spring or tap water? You want them made from purified (bottled) water.

What a coincidence... I just got back from there this morning... I was there for a week. Beautiful weather!!!! It rains at least once a day (like Florida).... As for deals, its full of them.. but bring your bargining shoes with... There are flea markets all over the place, and they will deal on anything and everything.... They start high, you start really low!!!! (i.e. I bought a hand carved mayan mask... he started at 1300 pesos, i said 300) After a few minutes... and an attempted walk away... i left with the piece for 300 pesos. Its quite fun... My buddy bought a bunch of Cohibas (cuban cigars) for less than $5 bucks each. My BIG piece of advice is learn to use pesos... if you pay with dollars, they will f*ck you over on the exchange rate and math.... believe it or not, it gets really confusing when you are wheeling and dealing. The exchange rate is approx... 9.3 pesos to 1 usd.

Oh, last note on the water thing... it really doesnt matter... i got sick every damn day... (meaning both 1 & 2 were liquid).... I guess I just got used to it, but I didnt do the water, and ate at well known restaurants.... Just bring some pepto and immodium... Drink Beer.. that is your safest bet...

i just got back monday from Cabo San Lucas and i ate every local dish known to man,skipped
the water and ice cubes though.not a peep from my digestive system either.
a rough estimate for purchases in Pesos is to knock off the last number for rough conversion.
example:300 pesos=30 us dollars roughly.

Yep, works pretty well, but always round up. Its really more like 9-9.25 pesos to the dollar right now.

BTW, I have drank many sodas (and even a few margaritas from the Tijuana Prision! ) without any incident, so not everything is bad.

and watch out for the mexican cops,a friend of mine was robbed by them when
he got seperated from everyone else and since he was drunk he was an easy mark.

Take a T shirt to trade at Carlos e Charlies, they will give you one of their shirts if you have something cool from home to trade. It's a bar, but keep in mind that they have plenty of the SEC, Big 10 kind of stuff, so take something different. Never ride the bus during Siesta time, all of the locals get aboard to catch abreeze and drink a beer, no seats! Sleep from 6-10 pm and then go out to party, the clubs don't get going till 1 AM. Don't step off a curb unless you look real good 1st. The locals get a kick by wacking you with their mirror for stepping in the street. Breakfast is one of the better meals at most places, Some allow a package that gives one meal a day, If you can swing brunch it will be enough to take you through an evening dinner. Dining is very reasonable as far as costs go.
