Start slow, warm up with long, low notes so that you don't blow your chops right away. You need to be careful that you do not practice with the wrong embochure otherwise you will regret it later and have to start over from scratch. You might want to practice in 15 minute intervals so that you can recondition your chops.

I hope I remember my fundamentals well enough to use a proper embochure... I've got Clarke and Arban, and a few others... I think I'll use the first few Clarke exercises.

I picked up the guitar a few years ago, and I've been playing that pretty much exclusively. My mom got me a nice Yamaha electric practice mute, so my wife won't get too pissed with my terrible tone...

I played French Horn & Melaphone for 6 years.

Remember that there is NO way you're going to be able to do half the things you did when you stopped playing a few years ago. Personally, I'd start by just buzzing in your mouthpiece until you are comfortable.

When you start playing the trumpet, see how many scales you can remember (and not just fingerings that you recall, actualy scales and their notes). Run through them until you feel comfortable.

Then I'd work on smaller exercises.

At least I have something left... When I listen to Wynton Marsalis Carnival I can still do most of the fingerings... Well, on the coupla songs I could play... BTW Any trumpet player that hasn't heard this album, you are REALLY missing out. It is by far the most virtuosic (SP) album I've ever heard.

If you really want to get your chops back into shape, then either pick up an Arban book or get any of the books by Allen Vizutti(sp?). His books are superb and will get you back playing in no time!

That's weird you mentioned Allen Vizutti, he graduated from a small high school in the town where I grew up (Missoula, MT) He played Arban's version of the Carnival of Venice with the Montana Symphony Orchestra when he was in 8th grade. I've met him, he's a prick.

Yeah...he's really not the nicest guy in the world, but the guy sure can play. My private lesson teacher (waaay back in high school) had a disc with him doing 12 or 13 different variations on the carnival. I found it to be quite amazing.

I played in high school. Don't have much time to play it in college. I stopped about a year ago. I'm going to play it over January, though. I'm following the advice.

I would love a copy of that Carnival of Venice album if you have it. If it's available to buy I can find it on CD here too. What's the name of it?

Just start over with the arban book. It's a great book.

Or just screw practicing and just work on Carnival of Venice, hehe

lot's of people have done the arban "Carnival Of Venice" variations.

Wynton Marsalis did a hideously fast version of it. It's on his CD "Carnivale" and the "Classic Wynton" CD. His double-tounging is AMAZING!!

THere are good euphonium (the instrument i play) versions out there too. One guy that did it has a CD called "Eufish." his version is pretty good. If you can find a Brian Bowman recording of CoV, his euphonium playing is without comparison.

Chops = long tones. You guys know that. There is no shortcut. Just make sure to do flexilbility excercises so you don't ruin your emboucure. Also, don't fry your chops trying to quickly regain what was lost.

Id reccomend Arbans (a.k.a. the Bible) for gettin your chops back. Some GREAT exercises in there, including alot of etudes and other such things.

I'll try out ur guys suggestions...puttin that 1200 dollar instrument to use again!

Yeah it's definately no fun to get pooped after 20 minutes when I used to be able to scream for 2 hours... *sigh* Theres no better feeling than sittin lead in a good jazz band and playing louder than everyone else combined......
