I used to play the trumpet. Had to stop when I got Bell's Palsy. Lessons are recommended.

lessons would certainly help.
i think trumpet is a hard instrument to just pick up, unless you happen to be good at that sort of thing. its not really hard to play but it certainly is a bit of a physical feat. especially if you are doing short, quick changes like ska would demand.

If you haven't played the trumpet at all....

YES, you will need lessons. Ska is based heavily on jazz, and you're not going to be able to play it well enough to play ska within a few months.

Start out with a cheap one from a music store ($600 or so), or (better choice), rent the trumpet. If you still want to do it after a fair time has passed, King is a good trumpet brand. You can anslo look in music catalogs for some blue/red/colors trumpets, too.

Heck, I've been playing sax for almost 6 years now and I only just got bumped up to a top-o-the-line one.

I played Trombone in high school..was in jazz band, got all sorts of fun awards.

If I recall correctly, Bach makes the best brass instruments. I had a Bach Omega, and it kicked ass.

If you're looking for something cheap, just find a used trumpet. You should be able to pick up a decent used one for around $200 I'd guess (haven't looked in a long time). And lessons would definately help speed up the learning process.

Hey I was a trombone player as well in a jazz band. I played in the all state jazz band. Had a lot of fun doing it. I had a Bach as well, but i didnt realize what I had then, because i treated it like sh!t. Wish I still had it.
Damn that was a long time ago

you can probably get one used under 150-200
i wouldnt get nice one until you can play.
it takes alot of practice to develop a nice tone. you have to learn to breathe into the instrument as opposed to just blowing or forcing air into it. be sure and push with your abdomen, before you start playing work on breathing with your abdomen or stomach instead of your diaphragm or chest. it helps.

i played brass instruments in band all through school. started on the coronet (small trumpet) in 6th grade, moved to the baritone from 7th-12th, played in a trombone choir 10-12th.

lessons would be a good idea....rent for starters.

its important to start with the right habits, otherwise you will not develop the muscles you need. Also, lessons will provide you with the right exercises to build your range.

Trumpet is easy between C and Middle C...but very little music is actually written for that range. Moderate difficulty for the octove above and below that middle octacave, and very difficult for anything higher (hard to hit and stay in tune).

It's a ska revival..

Again!

Seriously, good luck in learning. I play guitar and I am self-taught. You might want to grab a used trumpet and start trying to learn on your own before you drop any serious money on lessons or the like.
