Any TV-Tuner *only* cards?

I've got an ASUS 6800 Deluxe, and it does the Video Capture and Video Out functions just fine... but I'm looking for a cheap card that *only* does TV tuning -- because that's all I need! I don't want to buy any of those overpriced cards that also include a video capture function.

Any recommendations?

The software mpeg encoding on the Asus 6800 deluxe is not that good. The Mpeg 1 encoding on the ATI tv wonder is far better and the whole card is only 65$ US all over the net. ATI now makes a tv tuner only card that I saw at Worst buy about a month ago for 40$, I dont remember if it uses a usb connection or if it was a pci card.

Be aware that the Hauppauge Win TV has issues with the VIAtech chipset. Read their troubleshooting FAQ. With a BX board, it kicks ass.

Hauppauge Win-Tv never worked for me under two different installs of win98 and win2000. There faq did not help. I have a bp6 and a tnt2 u which were both compatible.


The drivers would install fine, but the software would not work for anything.

I have the pinnalce system, got it for 1.15 - 30 brand4less rebate and 20 rebate a few month ago. It's decent but on Matrox G400, only on primary output, can't move to secondary!

Sorry I dont know much about TV tuners, but this does sound interesting to me. Do the tuners just pick up local stations like a regular TV? Or can you hook up a cable line to it? Or do I just not know what I am talking about at all? Reason I ask is that it would be a nice space saver in college using my 17" monitor as a tv instead of having both.

I can only tell you about ATI tv tuner cards. They have composite, s-video and standard cable inputs. You can use it for basic arial feed, cable tv or any other inputs.
The ATI card has some basic software which allos you to "capture" video from VCR's, camcorders etc. Basically anything with a video out signal. I love it.
as for the dorm room thing... it would work... you probably won't get any work done though.

I've had a Happauge WinTV on a MSI 6309 (VIA 133a based MB) and a Soyo 6VBA133 (VIA 133 based board). Both on Win98 and Win2k (and hopefully soon in WinME once I get that installed).

Stick with Happauge or ATi for TV tuners, they have the best support.
