Any way to test your network "locally" the way it is seen "remotely".

Hope I'm explaining this right, its difficult to put into words.

I'm wondering if there is any way to test your own network the same way that it would be seen from accessing it remotely over the internet (connecting from a different network over your wan ip)? Something like connecting through a proxy back into your own network?

For example say you setup port forwarding on your router, and you want to make sure WanIP:5000 gets properly routed to your SSH Server:22. Or say you've setup port knocking, and want to test it. Or test to make sure SSH tunneling, or a VPN is working correctly?

Basically since internal privileges and ports and access is very different than external ports and access, is there a way to test the way your network behaves when accessed externally, without requiring you to use a seperate network to do so?

It depends on the Router, some Routers would allow it.

Give it a try.

Tunnelling to another location via VPN would certainly work if the VPN is set up as to put 100% of your traffic through it (rather than allowing some local access).

I like the idea of the VPN, does anyone happen to know if any of the free VPN's or proxies will allow traffic from all programs?

I have tried using Tor before, and I know it works for this purpose as far as accessing web based stuff, like running an IP camera on port 80. I could connect to my wan IP through tor. However from what I know, tor is set up for firefox. I don't know if I'd be able to test out ssh, or other services which require different software/ports.

I'm guessing it might be possible to get a firefox plugin for most things you'd want to test, such as an ssh plugin, but looking for perhaps a simpler or more elegant solution. I'm pretty new to this, so I have a feeling there may be simple solutions right in front of my face that I don't know of.

In theory, Tor works with any ports, but I think most exit nodes restrict the majority of them, so it probably isn't the best solution. I suggest using a cell phone/3G connection, or a VPN.

Another simple solution is to tether a laptop to your cellphone. You'll be on your wireless carriers network and can then try "looking in" to your wired network. But yeah, from a desktop perspective you'd need to use a VPN that does *NOT* enable split tunneling to send all traffic out, then back in.

Some routers will allow you to create a NAT loopback or possibly automatically make it for you when you create a port forward.
