I was wondering if there are any low powered x86 boards that are fairly cheap, are basically SoC with onboard memory (optional) and has an onboard eMMC or SDCard slot? Basically specs similar to all these Linux dev boards that are coming out, but with x86 instead. DC powered and an HDMI or VGA port would also be necessary. Also, priced around $100.

Basically, I want something low powered and cheap that I can easily install Linux on. I want x86 in case I need to install Windows, but I will be trying to work with Linux if possible.

Well, there are the Minnowboards...

Or this:

Or this + a Kabini CPU:

Really though, your requirements and expectations strike me as odd.

Small, power-efficient ARM hobbyist boards are cheap because power-efficient ARM SoCs are (relatively) cheap. Power-efficient ARM SoCs are relatively cheap because they are used in relatively inexpensive devices with a HUGE market. ARM SoC devboards are cheap because there is a lot of competition among fabless semiconductor makers vying for a piece of that huge market.

On the x86 side, chips that can run windows are relatively expensive because there is very little competition, and power efficient chips that can run Windows are even more expensive.

Well, considering the preorder price for the dual core minnowboard max, I'll probable go with this.

The Celeron N2807 has a max TDP of 4.3W and an SDP of 3W, so it seems more power efficient than even the minnowboard max.

The most interesting x86 product I've come across is only $49, but it's processor is only 300 MHz w 128 MB RAM.

The biggest reason I wanted to go x86 over ARM is because it doesn't seem that you can just pop in a DVD and install the OS. It seems like it has to has to be built first, then added to the storage, so you have to rely on someone to maintain it and port apps.

Glad you found something that worked for you. I thought about suggesting baytrailwasn't sure about your power budget or size limits.

For what it is worth, the situation on the ARM side isn't as challenging as you might imagine. A few distros provide binary package repositories for a few major generations of ARM ISA, so apps aren't a big problem. Kernels can be more of a hassle though, though I think its better now with more recent SoCs since more of them are in mainline.

I've run Debian on Marvel Kirwood for a while, and other than finding recent kernel builds and initramfs, it has been pretty much like running it on x86. That said, I'd been thinking of doing a new build with an iMX.6 board for my home server, but decided to go with x86 (Kabini) because of the flexibility and additional I/O.
