I really liked the remake they did, but honestly I agree with smackababy. The remake would have probably been much better for me if I hadn't played the first one on the PS. I remembered 90% of the game so for me it wasn't as scary wandering around the halls as I knew when things were going to jump out at me. It captured the same magic in enjoyment but not the same level of feeling uneasy the PS did. Still a great game, and I really wish they kept that feeling. The newer REs just plain blow, and it's a shame. I've bought every platform the game came on just to play it, the Gamecube, even the Dreamcast for Code:Veronica. Now I only play the newer stuff on sale, and most of that gameplay is spent wondering why the polluted a already complicated storyline with pointless crap.

After about RE:CV, the stories of RE just totally became laughable, really starting with 4.

For 5 & 6, I didn't even care anymore, since the games themselves were awful anyway.

I hope if/when Capcom decides to reboot the franchise, they take a page out of the "Sometimes, less is more" approach to story-telling.
In Re1, we had an awesome, climactic battle against Tyrant on a helipad and in the lab.
By RE5, we're fighting Wesker, in a giant mutated form, in the pit of an active volcano.

I have a CD wallet full of GC game right here ...
Metroid Prime
Killer 7
Super Monkey Ball 2
Wind Waker
Resident Evil 4
Mario Kart Double Dash
Ocarina of Time

I know there were other greats, but these are just some of the great games I had for this console. Metroid Prime is probably one of my all time favourites.

Not really because I still play it almost daily on my Wii (well, usually Virtual Console games).

I'm really not sure how anything outside of pure nostalgia can make you say that.

EVERYTHING the remake added (and it added A LOT), was exceptional. Very few remakes or sequels can say that.
The inclusion of "Lisa", the 'character', the locations she's in, and her music/presence, is some of the creepiest, most disturbing stuff in the series. When you first go behind the stairwell in the main hall thinking "Hmm..this wasn't here before...I wonder what this is..", and then hear the creepy-as-all-hell moan, and the chains moving...pure genius.

When you first see 'her'...and begin reading the journal entries, piecing together what happened to 'her'...while THIS MUSIC plays:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gowxYE12LFA

..it was brilliant.

All the other additions were excellent too (that awesome staircase outside in the mansion courtyard that descends like 100 feet).
Not to mention the superficial stuff like stellar graphics, sound, music, dialogue (well, leagues beyond the original), and control.

I'll always be one of the staunchest defenders of the original RE, it's tank controls, it's B-movie dialogue.
But damn if the remake is not the absolute pinnacle of the series....and right there with Silent Hill 2 as the best the genre has to offer.
I won't argue the remake added a lot of good things, but it didn't capture what I felt the original one did. But, that was also because I knew what to expect. Even the added stuff was still familiar. The original just had what I wanted in a survival horror game. I was a fairly competent character (unlike the Silent Hill series, that I also enjoyed a great deal early on) and I had a large, puzzle filled house to explore. It helped that I lived in Seabrook, TX and had been inside the List "Murder" Mansion. It was rather tacky, and had quite the story of secret passages and hidden rooms, as well as murder, about it.

I hate the Nintendo 64 (especially compared to the Sega Saturn which was the best of its generation) but the Gamecube had some real masterpieces in spite of the hardware limitations making the games less enjoyable than they could've been... extra audio compression due to smaller medium, no RGSS, shitty texture filtering, blotchy textures due to high S3TC ratio, frame buffer artifacts, 60 hz input limitation even when hooked up to a computer monitor using the D-terminal cable, etc., etc.

It's interesting how the only 2 Nintendo consoles I really loved are the Gamecube and the Super NES, although the DC was better than the GC (because the Dreamcast was the first for like half of all modern gaming features) and the PS2 was as good.

SNES was by far the pinnacle of Nintendo, and it wasn't even close.
N64 had some gems, but it's not in the same league as the SNES. Pretty much EVERY worthwhile game on the N64 was made by either Rare or Nintendo themselves.
The SNES had triple AAA games in every genre from a multitude of developers and publishers. IMO, a library that hasn't been matched.

As for the GC, I've had one since launch. It was a sadly overlooked and under-appreciated console. I still have the fondest memories of the Resident Evil remake, which still stands easily as one of THE best survival horror games out there, and the best entry in the RE series.

What are some must-play games on GC? I thought about getting some for my Wii but nothing ever comes to mind as a must play.

I tried the Zelda on an emulator to see if I should buy it, but I didn't like it.

Wind Waker, I'm looking forward to the HD remake.

A lot of folks in here are making it sound like Nintendo is doomed. Read this:

Software wise, Nintendo may have a stronger lineup come December than either PS4 or Xbox One. They may do just fine.

No they won't and that's a guaranteed fact. They have no 3d mario, no new zelda title, and smash bros won't be out until 2014. Meanwhile the PS4 and XB1 will have the superior versions of every cross platform title out there. Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, CoD Ghosts, all the sports games...all best on PS4/XB1. Not counting the PC versions of any of these.

It really revolves around how you define "fine". I agree they're not going out of business anytime soon, and the line up they are attempting to have will help boost some sales. They just have a really long way to go to get back to a major seller, and I think that's what most people consider "fine". The sad reality is in this market, it's been shown again and again that if you are NOT a major seller it's only a matter of time before you're swallowed up.

^^ From a retail standpoint, he's pretty accurate.

New Battlefield, new CoD, new Madden....on a brand new console? HUGE.

We as jaded gamers may roll our eyes at "Installment 43 in the CoD series" or "Madden: Check Out This New Roster Edition", but retailers are salivating over these titles, and they are going to sell like hot cakes covered in crack.

That the WiiU won't even HAVE these titles, and will have inferior ports of the IPs it does get, is going to play a huge factor in sales this season, no doubt about it.

The Gamecube was my favorite console of that generation.

My list of favorites include Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime 1/2, F-Zero GX, Wind Waker, Ikaruga, Resident Evil 4 (GC version was the best in my opinion), Rogue Squadron 3, and Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes. I'm also probably in the minority but I also enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine more than 64 or Galaxy 1/2. I also played more Mario Party 4 and 5 with friends than any other title.

My favorite consoles by generation have been the NES, SNES, Gamecube, and PS3.

Played a lot of Golden Eye and Smash but I wasn't particularly attached to the N64/PS1/Saturn/Jaguar/3D0 Generation for some reason.

No need to reminisce. Just lets all get Xboxones
Now that Xbox One can be anything we yell at them,
I demand it be free and backwards compatible with Gamecube games.

I remember hearing an employee at a game store (either GameStop or Funcoland) just matter-of-factly tell a customer that an XBOX with a mod chip could play PS2 and GameCube games. This is when all of those systems were current-gen.

I just couldn't say anything to counter that kind of ignorance.
