Frankly in MY opinion all soda is nasty and drinking most hard liquor straight-up is roughly equivalent to intentionally chugging down kerosene taste-wise.

I agree with you on the booze straight up, at least for most of it. I've been on a bourbon kick for most of this year, and with a couple of melted ice cubes it's pretty good.

Agreed, if it's American/Japanese whiskey I enjoy it with a little ice, the good Scottish stuff I'll take neat with a couple drops of water.

Well I get an actual bottle of vodka, not tiny ones. Mix with a splash of tonic water and then some seltzer. Lime if on hand

A nice old fashion for me please. But if I want to just get a drunk, like on an airplane, I'll take a jack and coke or ginger ale and vodka.
I was never a fan of Coca-cola by itself, but with the right balance of Jack Daniels in, it transcends the humble origins and becomes delicious.

I've mixed vodka with all sorts of things to avoid making an extra trip to the store, but this is only if I'm out of something tangy like fruit juice or tomato/V8. Come to think of it, I've done Tang and vodka (and water) and it wasn't too bad, in a pinch. Soda not so much, would do a Jack 'n Coke but don't want carbonated vodka.

I like the taste of whiskey but since vodka has practically no taste, it's always about whatever else I want to taste, which is why I bought the OJ, V8, etc. in the first place. Unfortunately sipping acidic beverages is bad for your teeth, so I have a water chaser.

I once mixed a couple shots of vodka with Canada Dry Cranberry Ginger Ale. It was great.

The only seriously sweet drinks that I can handle anymore are fruit/fruit-juice based along the lines of a pomegranate martini or a top-shelf Tequila Sunrise.

I much prefer a sour/bitter flavor in alcoholic beverages these days if I'm having one at all..... my preference is a 7-9% IPA or a heavy, potent Cabernet.

One of the few vodka-powered cocktails I really do like is a Sea Breeze. (vodka, grapefruit, cranberry with spritz of seltzer OTR)

The current wave of hazy IPAs insisting on fruit flavors is driving me batty. Glad that Stone's Arrogant Bastard is still around.

Yeah hazy and juicy IPAs have gotten out of hand, kind of like how west coast IPAs were everywhere for a while. My go to's for non hazy IPAs are half acre bodem or revolution anti hero.

And they both suck. They're for children who want to hide the flavor of the spirit behind a bunch of sugar. Same as gin and koolaid.
10:30 AM next to the pool:
Hendricks = not great
Hendricks + lemonade= perfect summer drink. Not too sweet and the subtle cucumber really goes well with Lemonade.

There is a whole world of delicious mixed drinks. If you can't find a good one, you or the bar are not making it right.

G&T is the only mixed drink I make, and only in the summer. I could see gin & lemonade as long as the lemonade wasn't disgustingly sweet as it usually is. Otherwise, I don't see a purpose for mixed drinks when good whisky exists.

I'm not a whisky-lover by any means and even I wouldn't mix a quality single-malt with nasty soda.... or really anything beyond maybe an ice-cube or two.

Although to be fair the best cocktails/sauces/recipe's etc ARE made from the BEST ingredients!

Point being while some would call it a "waste" to use top-shelf liquor in baking or a dessert-topping for example, other folks will insist on that sort of thing and while some are pretentious fakes, others CAN tell the difference!

Does aNYONE THINK that maybe the reason that Gizmo J's "skin is warm / on fire" in the other thread, might have to do with:
1) Ingesting alchohol
2) Mixing meds / supplements with alcohol (DONN'T do it!)

I've learned to love Bourbon. Scotch is something I have to try again. My local store doesn't carry Lagavulin, so I have to go two towns over. Maybe this weekend.

I'm not crazy about Scotch myself but I can understand why people enjoy it.... really the only hard liquor I have a weakness for is tequila.

I mostly like Highland scotch, which is closer to bourbon flavor-wise. Looks like Lagavulin is an Islay, so it probably tastes like smokey Band-Aids, I'd pass on that personally. More power to you if you like it though.
