WARNING: Might contain spoilers, so don't read this post if you haven't seen the movie.

I guess I'm a little too young to appreciate the days of ol Billy Shatner, but this particular installment just didn't resonate with me.
It felt extremely predictable, from the female alien being part of the bad guys, to Kirk turning down the position for Vice Admiral, and just the "oh no, evil villain with unstoppable forces!" yet everything turns out 100% fine at the end. The whole playing VHF to mess with the "swarm" was pretty ridiculous, (radio waves just blows them up....??) and just the overall physics and feeling of the ending scene was totally unbelievable to me.

I get it's just a movie, but the whole thing felt like the producers were just like, "eh feck it... We have a cult following, just make things go boom!!"

If you were in a block of ice since 2009 or so I could see why that would be surprising, but I think everyone else saw that twist coming from miles away.

Yeah I guess I just felt this one wasn't as good as the others. It's like they don't care about the story at all, as long as it makes some logical sense and makes big booms & 'splosions.

I refuse to use
spoiler
tags. Especially when it then makes the whole OP totally black. I mean, as you know, I do like things big and black, but not in this case.

Not a great movie but it was good enough. The humor with Bones & Scottie made up for the obvious plot holes.

I'm still trying to figure out
was the evil Captain one of the weird vampire aliens from the beginning as in his beginning in Star Fleet? Doesn't seem like he was but that was glossed over.

He was a human originally, a MACO military captain (think the Marines) from the time of the Enterprise TV show. Once the Federation was formed, they disbanded MACO and assigned them to Starfleet, whose mission was exploration.

Kroll was an "immortal" version of the captain from that original star fleet. In fact, all of those creatures were former members (I believe...). They were seeking vengeance because they felt that The Federation abandoned them and did not search hard enough when they crashed on that planet. Somehow they discovered how to be ageless, but it turned them into those prune looking nutsack faces they became.

Huh, that's how I felt about the first reboot movie, and therefore have not acknowledged it or the follow-ups.

This has been the knock on the JJverse since 2009. They are Star Trek in name only. Just a cash machine trying to get 40 something parents to get their kids hooked on Star Trek all over again. The only resemblance it bears to the actual Star Trek is a few characters and the name. I checked out the first two and they are almost unrecognizable in the Star Trek universe. Total garbage.

"Total Garbage" also goes for JJ Wars.

http://www.slashfilm.com/j-j-abrams-responds-to-the-force-awakens-a-new-hope-comparisons/

He just stole shit from the first series (1970's star wars) and hopes that too many of us old folks are dead or senile to realize it's a ripoff.

It's all about the ducketts.

Why did he look like the captain again at the end? Made no sense.

The technology he was using to prolong his life appeared to transfer many genetic attributes of the donor species, thus when he started using humans he was reverting to his original human form

No, the creatures were drones left behind by the species that developed the weapon. Edison explains all this pretty clearly.

Just my opinion.

I think this is probably the best explanation but doesn't make huge sense. He did the same thing when he first boarded the ship when he stole the artifact, but it didn't seem to have that affect.

I think they did it to personify him a bit (he was dressed in his old uniform somehow...???) and somehow make us feel for him.

Again. Meh movie was meh.

I was OK with this one here's my second question

why did he even need the super weapon/ virus thing? He had a clear technological advantage why did he need more?

Anyone else think of the odds of the OP being unable to find the preexisting thread for the movie before going full special snowflake mode and starting a new one?

He had a tactical advantage over the Federation for the time being. If his intent, as stated, was to move on and annihilate Federation worlds he was going to need warp capable starships...which Yorktown had.

Movie was alright, not bad not great. They are definitely going in the less story, more explosions and CGI direction that 99% of Hollywood is going for these days.

I liked it because it was Star Trek, but if it were any other movie I'd be like meh its Transformers all over again.

wasn't his swarm warp capable? Didn't the Enterprise have a short warp trip to get there?

It was decent, I'd give it a 7. Far better than the first trailer for the movie made it appear. I still like the first one best. It's been diminishing returns ever since.

Again, kind of a meh plot but I'm assuming it's because he couldn't break into the colony with just the swarm. Even though they could take down the most advanced ship the fleet had......

I felt like this thread was to specifically ask people why they didn't like it (if they didn't). I felt like it could be it's own discussion.

With that said, you're obviously special enough to feel like you had to post in my speeshul thread
