Again, kind of a meh plot but I'm assuming it's because he couldn't break into the colony with just the swarm. Even though they could take down the most advanced ship the fleet had......

I felt like this thread was to specifically ask people why they didn't like it (if they didn't). I felt like it could be it's own discussion.

With that said, you're obviously special enough to feel like you had to post in my speeshul thread

That's about the dumbest answer I've seen for duplicating a thread yet.

I can barely remember watching this movie it was so boring. And the way they finally achieved victory had shades of Independence Day (1 or 2, dealer's choice). IOW it was just stupid. And that's even before we start talking about the main premise of the movie which we can accept with some hand waving. But if you're going start e'splainin' things, they should at least make some sense.

Even the cgi was meh. Some of the scenes at the space station in the finale were pretty good but I thought they did that sort of thing even better and more extensively in Tomorrowland, so that was also unimpressive.

Overall, the movie insults what little intelligence you can keep awake for the entire 2 hours and doesn't even compensate you with tasty eye candy.

How was it Kirk was up for promotion to Vice Admiral anyway? Isn't that three stars? One thinks if you're a Captain that the next job on the totem pole is Commodore. (Or Rear Admiral Lower Half)

Like the others, I will probably see it when it is on Netflix, and only if I am already drunk.

Yeah, it was predictable in many parts, but it's a fun movie. I enjoyed it.

I dunno, I think people are somewhat harsh on these movies because they're looking at the old movies and series with very rose colored glasses.

Maybe that's true to some extent but the first thing that comes to my mind is the fact that you have this truly vast, rich universe of cultures that has been created over what, 5 tv series and 6 movies (pre-Abrams). And instead of drawing on that in some way you decide to pull yet another nondescript humanoid species out of your bunghole instead. Then, instead of coming up with anything really imaginative you do some ridiculous Indiana Jones type nonsense - which btw is fine as long as you make it interesting.

And that's where you might have a point. Maybe it was actually interesting and I just can't see it because either I had unrealistic expectations or more likely, I'm just a miserable human being. But the more I think about it the more I really believe they dropped the ball.

Predictable, never really felt anyone important was going to die, and same question at the end about
how the hell did radio make all the drones explode?
Regardless, it was an enjoyable distraction from the real world for 90 or so minutes.

It's funny how every mainstream storyteller almost never gets a simple thing like military ranks correct.

it was very meh, which is to be expected considering the 2nd one was kinda meh and the first one was a little meh.

I think we finally hit the point where we can end it. 3 mediocre films are more than enough. At this stage what we really need is a good series, cuz frankly thats all Star Trek has to offer.

I took the family to the 3D IMAX showing last week. I thought the movie was worth seeing, better than the last one but not as good as the first reboot. I would like to see it again at some point because the IMAX experience was honestly a little overwhelming. Way too loud and the 3D was tiring after a bit.

I've just read they are in the works (contract signing, etc) of a 4th. Not sure how accurate, I believe I read that on wiki.

It's all about those benjamins baby!

wasn't his swarm warp capable? Didn't the Enterprise have a short warp trip to get there?

The drone ships did not appear to be warp capable. My recollection is that Yorktown was in close proximity to the nebula and that Enterprise went in under impulse due to all the crap that was inside it.

This has been the knock on the JJverse since 2009. They are Star Trek in name only. Just a cash machine trying to get 40 something parents to get their kids hooked on Star Trek all over again. The only resemblance it bears to the actual Star Trek is a few characters and the name. I checked out the first two and they are almost unrecognizable in the Star Trek universe. Total garbage.

I completely agree. I thought the first two Trek movies were bad, particularly the last one. I haven't seen this one yet but the wife loves these movies for some inexplicable reason, so I'll probably have to go sooner or later.

Hopefully the new series will turn out to be good, because these new movies have been terrible IMO. Compare any of these movies to Wrath of Khan and it is obvious how bad they are.

I suppose just like he was promoted to Captain of Starfleet's flagship after being a drunken, skirt-chasing cadet and skipping several ranks in between - the idiocy of the producers and script writers.

I generally go into most movies these days with pretty low expectations. Given that, I enjoyed this one for what it was.

Not even sure what military ranking Star Fleet uses (I'm guessing Navy?) but they must have wanted to keep up the derpy tradition of going from cadet to "first officer" right up to captain, by skipping rear lower and upper admiral, and going right to vice.

About as likely as radio waves blowing up ships because that's the communication frequency they use.. D:

i was under the impression that the radio did not explode them, but rather it caused confusion and chaos for their navigational ways, so they literally just ran into each other

Rank in the JJ verse isn't all that clear. Vice Admiral could be the first rung on the flag officer ladder.

Yes, but that isn't something that should result in 100% destruction.

Why did he look like the captain again at the end? Made no sense.
And why didn't he think about his old ship as a possible hiding place?, then the girl "needs" Scotti's help but somehow she has managed to "cloak" the ship and herself from the bad guys and WTF, a dirt-bike 500years old that still runs?...

I haven't seen the latest one, but I hated the first two. I don't see why they need to abandon the original Star Trek universe and make a new one. Surely there are stories to tell in the old timeline.

The new one doesn't exactly explain what happened to the crew to make them become the baddies. It also doesn't explain where their technology came from to give them such impressive capabilities. I know its only entertainment but some things just don't seem to flow well and to be honest I'm not impressed with it. Then I don't like the non-cannon timeline they've created and the ships look like poo not to mention the effects. Now ftl is just a blur around the ship distorting everything which takes away from the scene.

Does anyone else have an issue with the ship design? I mean putting your primary propulsion units away from the main hull on tiny support pylons just makes me cringe every time I look at them. Then to have two very massive body pieces attached by a thin connector that is stressed under load just makes me shake my head. Sure it looks neat on the big screen but in reality nobody would do something like that. Then there's the uniforms which have gotten even uglier. What's with the 1700's dress uniform look? You've got to hand it to Gene Roddenberry for putting the ladies in the mini skirts as uniforms. If hot chicks on a navy ship dressed like that just imagine the chaos it would cause on a daily basis. Sexual harassment anyone?
