Not sure I see the problem with $380 for the 1070 if it really delivers 980TI performance. Add in a few mail in rebates, some competition from AMD and you could be paying $325 for a 1070 in a few months (though 380 sounds fine to me). The 980TI has been a 'slickdeal' at $550 for the past 6 months. What more do you expect?

Just ignore the founders editions -- stupid cash grab by Nvidia.

It depends on availability.

If all we have are "Founders Edition" until July/August then the 380$ is basically a lie (as is the 600$ price of the 1080).

If all this founders-only nonsense release is indeed true, this really feels like nvidia just trying to one-up AMD, as they "released first", as otherwise I don't really get why they had this press event. A paper launch for a limited (and expensive) edition 1080/1070? meh.

Just to make sure I understand everything correctly:

nvidia is basically releasing the cards at 700$/450$ for "early adopters", and trying to make it look cool by calling it "founders edition"? Looks like a great way to increase MSRP even though they're saying that the MSRP is really 600/380...

The above is of course based on the assumption that there will only be founder cards at the beginning, which is what the AT article is implying.

We'll have to see whether it's just a marketing cover for a paper launch. I suspect the "Founders" edition cards will be OOS shortly after availability.

If it's OOS some people will just say because demand is crazy high, it's not low volume at all... even if nobody is mass producing GDDR5X anywhere in the world ATM. Hmm..

Even the 970/80 was a bit of mess for a little bit as I remember? The demand just gets overwhelming, and it takes a couple of months for all of the better OEM editions to sort out sensibly anyway.

If no time pressure, the sane projected timeline for getting these things in full comfort would be September ish.

but founder editions are reference cards...
how aftermarket cards can be 100USD cheaper?I think 1070 will cost 450 even aftermarket and 1080 will cost 700USD.
When last time aftermarket cards was 100USD cheaper?

MSI, Zotac, and Gigabyte all made 980TIs that retailed for $600 when the reference was selling for $650. Given the upgrades to the reference cooler this time, it's easy to see how they'll be able to offer 1080s of their own designs for considerably less. Whether retailers try to gouge customers by charging more than retail is a different story, but I guarantee there will be 1080s with $600 MSRPs at launch.

well what purpose do they have else than to cover their asses till the normal ones come? if they are so highly clocked then the aftermarket ones would have no purpose at all if they continue to get sold

I'm always happy to see a new generation, but I'll reserve judgment until I see the performance benchmarks. The 1080 was never going to be a good deal but the 1070 could be reasonable depending on how things shake out. But it's impossible to tell without benchmarks.

I don't understand what "Founders Edition" means. Who is founding what? Or is this a release in cooperation with Founders Brewing Co.?

More I look at this release the more that I just think the whole release was very shwarmy and misleading. Looking at other forums, there's a TON referencing the 2x faster than Titan X for the 1080. I mean reddit, forums, videocards and wccf, TONS of people have been misled with that statement that he closed on and failed to mention that the 2x faster than TitanX was ONLY in VR and ONLY with a specific method applied that ZERO games have even announced support for, so in real life its completely non-applicable yet.

If AMD made some kind of qualified statement like that such a a 390X as fast a 980ti with Async compute, this forum would be up in nuclear arms.

In addition, nvidia has paper launched to ZERO complaint. Not only that, but its looking like you are going to be paying $700 for the right to buy the thing in June and possibly July. $500 for a founders 1070... Not only are they paper launching but they have managed to bring their midrange dies into historically high prices

Because it makes you a FOUNDER! How cool is that?? Thats like Kickstarting Nvidia!

Seriously though, just more price gouging from Nvidia but hell, he did say that it cost them BILLIONS, BILLONS, BILLONS in R&D

It isn't such a papery launch yet - depends what happens in a few weeks. If it launches basically full scale on the dates announced then it's OK. A bit of pre warning is fair enough.

If there is really limited stock for a few months then you'll see deserved complaints!

They are also only launching the Founder's Edition at those dates, so extra $$$ if you want it at "launch".

Unless you think there are huge quantities of GP104 dies ready, there won't be much effect on market share in the short term [couple months].

A completely "out of the blue" drop of Polaris with unforeseen high performance will have a much bigger shock effect. This shakes individual's fundamental beliefs and AMD needs this to start on the road-back in the retail consumer space.
What can Nvidia offer at 250 that's a better deal than a 380 980ti? The 1070 will destroy whatever Chance amd has left at regaining market share.

On top of that Nvidia will sell founders editions while amd is still struggling to get to market then hit them with a price drop.

Nvidia wins this generation with profit generating moves hands down. Doesn't matter what hardware amd has, Nvidia will lock the sales up easily.

Is that actually known or negative supposition?

Not that I mind much personally - as above, the truly good versions won't be out until September or so anyway.

I do think they won't leave it too long. They've stopped making sundry chips and this announcement will really dent sales of existing stock. NV have been far too organised recently to do a full scale mess up with this sort of stuff.

have you seen a normal 1070? no
have you seen how they gonna clock a normal 1070? no
have you seen anything from amd?no

fact is we have half of the one side here and nothing more founders cards are really lame move (for consumers) a great move for them i wonder how they gonna justify the price drop of the normal cards
