I recently received a job offer for a position in Logan airport. I currently live in New York City and I'm having a hard time finding an apartment in Boston. Does anybody have advice for finding a small apartment(1 bedroom) in the $400-$500 range in a decent neighborhood?
thnx.

I live outside of Boston, but I don't think you're going to find an apartment in a decent neighborhood for that price. I'd plan on around $1000.

I don't think you'll find anything in that price range. Sacotool is right. $1000 at least. I pay alot more for a 1 bedroom in Cambridge.

Ouch, that's a little too much for a 1 bedroom apartment. How about a middle-class neighborhood? Or a half-decent neighborhood?
Thanks.

Sorry don't really know for sure. The further you go out the cheaper it gets. Also the less safe places are cheaper. Roxbury for example.

Hey sounds like me. A Manhattan boy transported up to the frozen bay of Taxichusetts. I'm afraid you won't get much for $400 - $500. You'll end up in places like Dorchester or Roxbury (Boston's answer to Washington Heights and the the South Bronx). You can probably get a decent studio for about $800 in an area like Allston or Brighton which is on the edge of Boston proper past Boston University. One good thing is that unlike New York, you can get to the airport via the trains. When looking around the Boston area, make sure it is near the Green Line is you live to the west, the Red line if you live near Cambridge.

You can come live with me in Lowell. Two of our roommates are moving out (well, one is immediately, the other will be eventually), so my other permanent roommate (we're the ones with our names on the lease), he's freaking out about the rent split making our individual portions go up.

Not exactly CLOSE to Logan, but not too expensive.

And of course you'd have to live with me.

Hey Lord Evermore: You seriously want to torture him with the commute down Route 3 (Parking lot from 6AM - 10AM and 4PM - 7PM), then I-95 through Burlington (Imagine thounsands of workers for companies like Cisco, GTE, IBM/Lotus, lotsa dotcoms driving in at once), then down I-93 (180,000 cars per minute on a rutted, decrepid, twisty, narrow highway meant for 60,000 cars per minute). Then into Logan where The BigDig means any map older than 8 hours is obsolete because the street you drove on yesterday is a big hole today.

J/K

You can take the commuter rail from Lowell. The commuter rail is a relaxing way to get to work. Then from North Station you take the Green Line two stops and the Blue to Logan.

Ah, but a signature can be changed easily...

Massachusetts is actually pretty nice, I like it better than Florida, but I was only 21 when I left and hadn't really 'experienced' Florida much. I at least like the environment better, I like the weather. Taxes are hell, but I also make much more money.

I'd never suggest taking the highway the entire way to Logan. I've never done it, and when I'm in the car with my ex-gf's father when he does it I fear for my life.

I'd take 495 North to I93, then get on the train at Wellington Station. Of course that's if I wasn't able to take the commuter rail, which I'd do if I was working at Logan.

I'd never even seen a subway or commuter train before I moved here, let alone ridden one. I was in awe by the fact that I could park at one station, then ride into another station near the airport, and take a bus ride into the actual airport.

No way are you going to find one in that range. A guy I work with just moved up here from Queens and is paying $1200 for a 1 bedroom in Brighton (a neighborhood of Boston.) Try Quincy or Braintree which are right on the T's Red Line.

Is traffic really that bad? I have a car and i don't like to take the subway (I don't like the feeling of not being in control ). I remember seeing a program on TLC about the "Big dig" and the traffic was horrendous. I guess i'll try to find somewhere 10-20 miles away from logan.

Try www.rent.com [edit: rent.net, sorry]. I just checked there, and they only had one place when you searched IN Boston itself, in East Boston, but it was $591 to $775 per month for a one bedroom, with paid utilities. Still could stay under a grand with a 2 bedroom as well.

And yes, traffic CAN be that bad. It depends on WHEN you're driving. If you're driving during the 'normal' rush hours, then it takes a LONG time to get anywhere. But if your shift happens to fall into an odd range, then traffic is often a breeze.

I normally drive to work around 8AM. It's a 20 minute drive if there's no traffic and I can do my normal 80 to 85mph. But during the morning drive, it sometimes takes me 45 minutes. And that's assuming there weren't any accidents. If there are, then traffic gets stalled and slowed down for several hours afterwards. Massachusetts has some of the worst drivers on the planet.

Are you sure it's rent.com? I check and it said "This site is currently under construction".
I have the feeling that I'll be working the mid-night shift.

Thanks everyone for you help

EDIT: Run it by us Massholes and we'll give you the yea or nay.

If you don't mind noise, try "The College Ghetto" by Boston University.
