RPI is an excellent school. What engineering are you considering? Look at US News and World Reports for their grad school ratings.

I've looked at the reports and talked to some faculty and it seems great on paper, but I was just wondering more the research and graduate aspect that arent discussed on literature and stuff.

I did not go there, although I thought about it strongly. I have a friend who went there for his undergrad in CS. After talking to him about it he said the education was excellent, but he didn't like it there. It motivated him to load up on courses and graduate a year early.

For RPI or any school you're considering, go to their website and check out the names of their faculty members in your field. They should have a listing of their best publications at academic conferences. Then go to Google Scholar and cross-check their publications to see if their work has been highly cited. If a professor has a good publication record in both quantity and quality (meaning their work is highly cited), then you might want to consider him/her as your dissertation advisor. Another thing to look for is that most engineering departments publish yearly reports that show what research grants they have received and how many of their PhD students have graduated and where they went to.
