Anybody going to Sandybridge for crunching?

I know some of you are into getting the newest hardware if it actually has a lot of performance benefits over last gen. Any of you guys with I5s I7s or Phenom II X4/X6 heading down that path? I do use my CPUs for crunching usually SIMAP, Milkyway, and SETI.

Alas, I blew my load last year on computer hardware so this year I have to cut back. It's definitely tempting when the high end 1155 SB chips can compete with Gulftowns. Though I only spent $250 on my 970, I'd be pissed if I paid $1000.

I'm getting married in April so we'll see how much money is left over after paying off the wedding. With the power and thermal requirements being so modest with SB chips, I'm thinking of building a "micro" cruncher for my next build. It'll also double as a portable gaming rig for LAN parties. Mini tower case (probably Lian Li PC-A04), micro ATX mobo and 2600K.

Then again, if "lowly" 1155 SB chips can compete with Gulftowns, I'm wondering what kind of monster 2011 SB-E chips will be for crunching.

Sounds like you need to postpone the wedding and get Sandybridge. lol
Congratulations!!

Will 1155 SB really beat my i7 920 @ 3.99?

I'll probably have to wait to see how 2011 does or later chips

Your 4 GHz 920 should be able to hang with a stock 2600K. However, these 1155 chips can overclock to 4.5 -5 GHz on air!

Planning on putting a few bucks back for a new build to replace my aging C2D in the later half of this year. Unless of course someone wants to send me some money.

I wonder what the server version of these Sandy Bridge CPUs would be like? Anyone know if they plan on doing a Sandy Bridge version of an SR-2 build? That would be something to see

I found this on fah-addict: http://en.fah-addict.net/news/news.php

"And finally, we come to the PPD, because that's what everyone's after! A grand total of 32,000 PPD was logged on a stock 3.5GHz i7 2600K by our colleagues at PCINpact. It's a sharp increase compared to the 20,000 PPD gained on an i7,870, and this will obviously only rise still further with a little overclocking."

Here's the link to PCINpact: http://www.pcinpact.com/actu/news/61145-intel-sandy-bridge-folding-bigadv-ppd.htm

Here's the google english translation:

"Thus, in our various tests, we used the Core i7 870 and Core i7 2600K to fold type units Bigadv . These are very profitable in terms of point and also require very large computing capacity."

"And the new Intel architecture, with its many changes, seems rather to assess the task since we are just past a score of approximately 20 000 to 32 000 PPD PPD passing from 870 to 2600K, using F @ H Tracker V2 and units of the project 6900."

"To recall, frequency level, the Core i7 870 runs at 3.06 GHz with its quad-core assets, against 3.5 GHz for the 2600K, a difference of 14%."

I am at 30k ppd with both of my 950's@4.1. I may get a 2600+ just to see what it will do.

So tempting. But I'm going to stay with my Q9300 @ 3.0 + GTX460 1GB @ 820 for now. Have to save money. I can barely afford my electric bill as it is.

Edit: Although, these new SB chips ARE extremely power-efficient.

any idea regarding power consumption @~4Ghz?

p.s - have a look here:
hwbot marks at 1M SuperPI, 980XE vs 2600K, the 980 is @6-6.1Ghz while the SB are at only 5.6..

2600K
have a look at the 6.688 records.

980XE

would definitely switch for one when second hand market opens up.
are you still curious what the 8 core DP would do? that would be a steep climb from westmere :awe:!

yes people actually say the SB's are working at 5 on air,
they give out magnificent results at WCG if you'r on there ~33-34K per 3.5Ghz -avg- at only ~120W from the wall...

Wait for 3rd quarter this year, they will release sandbridge without the GPU on-die. Be cheaper and run cooler. rumor is will be higher clock speed to.

Yes, see below for part of message i posted in CPU's & Overclocking Forum...

Picked up at local MC...

- 1 SandyBridge i7-2600K CPU
- Gigabyte LGA 1155 p67A-UD3P mobo (there was an UD4P but not interested in doing SLI)
- 2 4gb Corsair XMS3 1333 Mem (9-9-9-24 1.5 volt ver 8.11) for a total of 8 gigs
- Windows 7 64bit Ultimate OEM
- Corsair HX650w Power Supply
- Crucial 128gb SSD RealSSD C300
- Seagate 500gb barracuda sata hard drive
- LG internal BlueRay player/ DVD burner Sata Drive

Already have on hand an Antec 900 Midtower which used to house an intel 478 mobo that has been running for over 8 years 24/7 until noticed a couple of caps starting to swell up. The monitor for this set-up is already attached to an Q6600 box so will attached to the DVI input of the HP 2710 27" 16:9 monitor. The Q6600 is attached via hdmi cable from the EVGA 460 card in that box which is doing Folding @ Home for Team Anandtech!

I will probably dump an 8800gt evga card I have laying about into this new setup for now and am thinking of getting a Zalman cooler for the CPU (either an 9500 or the 9700) since I have these in my other boxes and am quite happy with them.

Will probably do BigAdv(?) and after a couple of weeks work the 8800gt card into crunching and see if Sandy can do both!

When its built (and I assume overclocked) let us know your final overclock, and the PPD on bigadv. I will do the same (mine will be here wed or thurs)...

I might be going to sandy bridge soon... those figures are very tempting and I'd like to get my first -bigadv under my belt!

Markfw900, what model motherboard is that? Will you be using it as a GPU cruncher as well, or do you think that will slow the CPU too much to be worth it (given the massive bonus points for quick returns)?

I have no more video cards to use as crunchers, but I might remove them from a Q6600, and shut it down to save power.

Edit: new motherboard will be asrock extreme 4 (I would have gotten the 6, but it wasn;t on the website yet)

Thanks. That motherboard looks nice, but I will have a look at other options as it would be useful for the TeAm to get a few comparisons. How much difference does RAM speed make? Anyone think it would be a mistake to go with 1600MHz to save money?

Edit: On second thoughts - there don't seem to be many motherboards in that price range that look any better so I may just go ahead and order. I'm not sure it's worth using slower RAM now that I've found 4GB of 2200MHz Kingston HyperX for only £90...

OK I'm pretty much ready to order this stuff now!

Edit: Ordered!

The following doesn't include VAT @ 20%

Item: Asrock P67 Extreme4 P67 Socket 1155 USB 3.0 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
Qty: 1Cost: £95.91

Item: Intel Core I7 2600k 3.4GHz Socket 1155 8MB Cache Retail Box Processor
Qty: 1Cost: £223.15

Item: Xilence Black 120mm Case Fan - 4pin with 3pin adaptor
Qty: 3Cost: £3.66

Item: OCZ Z Series 850W Modular PSU with 80plus GOLD Certification - 5 Year Warranty
Qty: 1Cost: £117.46

Item: Thermolab Baram 2010 Socket Intel 1156, 1366, 775, AMD AM3, AM2+, AM2 Processor Cooler
Qty: 1Cost: £34.55

Item: Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 2250MHz HyperX T1 Memory Kit CL9 XMP
Qty: 1Cost: £74.99

Item: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B Socket Intel 775 1156 1366 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
Qty: 1Cost: £36.99

Total = £594.03
VAT = £118.81
Total inc VAT = £712.84

That includes two heatsinks, one for my Q6600 to try and squeeze a few hundred more MHz out of it. I'm not ready to turn that off yet, it will still run with the three 8800GTs as they produce most of my current PPD. I'm going to work on getting both of my GTX460s running in this new system (one may have a fault but I'm still not sure as I'm also having RAM issues and can't rule anything out yet!), and probably stick my spare 8800GT in the M3A78-T for maximum PPD while I still live in a house where my landlord pays for the electricity!

I'll try to give a comparison of the Megahalem Vs Baram for overclocking potential. I understand they are very closely matched so it will be interesting to see which one has the edge in this setup.

I just ordered all the parts I need for a new gaming rig based around the 2600K processor that will be running 2 GTX 570's. Currently on socket 775 set up so really interested in seeing what performance increases I'll get. Of course I'll be folding with this as well.

Also my 4 dedicated GPU folding systems are all socket 775 based, half of them are dual core so I am not able to crunch the big adv WU's. If there is a significant output of science (points) with the 2600K I'll be upgrading all of them as well during the course of the year.

With what I know of the 2600K based on other peoples experience I'm expecting great things.
