I hope this isn't a stupid question: isn't the Note5 basically a S6+ without the edge?

You could make that argument, sure. They're not identical (different batteries and other features), but they have a lot in common. I don't really need the stylus though, and there's still the whole "putting it in backwards" bug that I'm afraid my kid and coworkers will be tempted by. Either way, even assuming that they're the same, I'm still torn between them and the V10.

Anyone interested with this phone, I have an extra 200GB SCMicro card, extra battery and wall charger in the for sale forum.

I was too, coming from a Note 4 and being highly disappointed in the Note 5 and S6 variants for their removal of key aspects. Got the V10 and have been loving it and NOT missing my Note 4, which I still have. The deciding factors for me, after years of being a galaxy fan, was the inclusion of everything samsung took out of their latest lineup. Removable battery, SD slot and evn the IR blaster. Its all in the V10

And honestly, the camera on the V10 is the best I have ever used on any phone. The FULL manual mode for pictures is astounding. I can even control how long the shutter stay open to really grab details in lowlight situations. Truly a great camera. The 200gb and spare battery and charger were just icing on the cake.

Your note4 may have gotten these as well with the 5.1.1 update, I know the Note5 had them both at launch. Not sure if they brought those features to the Note4 though.

It comes down to what is most important to you, the Note5 is more powerful in the CPU and GPU department, the Note5 also has GearVR support, samsung pay, etc. The V10 has a removable battery and mSD card. Those are it's primary advantages over the Note5, in most other aspects it is verrrry similar, or not as good.

So if you dont ever see yourself needing 200GB+ storage on your phone, the Note5 may be more enticing because of the more powerful SoC, or maybe you are interested in a phone that can dabble in VR, in which case the Note5 is obviously a better choice than the V10.

But if you want to carry a 100GB music library or movies around on your phone, the V10 with its mSD card slot will be more to your liking. Or maybe you REALLY need an IR blaster, or removable battery is something you've come to rely on.

Also, the spen "bug" is fairly overblown, sure it fits in backwards, but it doesn't do so unless you aim it STRAIGHT on, any slight angle and it wont fit, as opposed to when inserting the proper directing it will fit in very easily because of the curved tip. And further, if you DO put it in backwards, it can be removed without damaging your phone. The only thing that will cause damage is if you try to remove the spen when it is in backwards forcefully. If you try and force it out, it will break the internal latch sensor. Which even if that IS broken, still doesn't break anything else on the phone. So even if the worst case scenario were to happen, it's not like your phone is rendered useless, it will still function as a phone, it just can't detect when the stylus is inserted or removed.

Thanks. Another thing I liked on the V10 when I briefly demoed it at the store was the split-screen option being at my fingertips. The Galaxies can do that, but it's buried in options. Unless I'm missing something?

it's like one button press, not really sure what you mean by this?

Just open up the multitask menu with the left hand capacitive button. Press the split window button, it will then split screen on whatever app you selected and you can select another app to fit the other half or custom size the first one, etc.

You can also drag in from the corner to custom size an app for 1 hand operation.

Thanks. On my S4 I don't have those same options...maybe it's because of Nova Launcher? Either way, good to know it's that easy.

Played with the V10 and the Note 5 yesterday at the ATT store. The camera on the V10 is much better (especially full manual mode). But the Note is sleeker and has the stylus, and the V10 is enormous and less sleek. I'm torn...makes me want to wait to see what the Note 6 is like in March.

Note6 is most likely going to be june/july or later. The s7 will be march, or before, but I doubt the note will be released that early, it would be a first for samsung.

That being said, the Note5 camera actually scores objectively better than the LG V10 camera. About the only thing the V10 does better is manual video mode. So if you do a lot of video shooting, the V10 would be better.

Hrm, good point. That will make waiting harder.

The Note5 didn't seem to have full manual still camera mode though. I'm sure the camera is awesome in auto mode, but the v10 gives me almost every feature on my SLR, including white balance, ISO, shutter speed, etc. The Note 5 has many of these settings, but they're not as robust as the v10...

Why do I feel like I'm trying to talk myself out of buying the Note...?

huh?
You have to turn on "pro" mode on the note5, not automatic.

Once you do that all the manual camera features are there, just like the V10.

The only thing the V10 is better on is Manual video mode which the Note5 doesnt have (though its software stabilization is better for 4K recording). And the Note5 also doesn't have as good control over the shutter speed. It still has manual control, but only up to 10 second exposure, the V10 has up to 30 second exposure.

As far as I know, those are the only differences in the camera.

And in auto OR manual picture mode, the note5 by most reviewers metrics, is better.

Why do I feel like I'm trying to talk myself out of buying the Note...?

Both are good phones, I feel the biggest deciding factor is removable storage and removable battery. If those 2 things aren't that important to you, the note5 is the better phone.

If you need mSD card and removable battery, the V10 is for you.

You can't really go wrong with either phone, especially if you've tried them both.

However LG's resale value have historically been pretty bad and they tend to firesale their phones pretty quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if you could pick it up for under $500 early next year. T-mobile currently has it for $600 - $75 deal.

The Note 5 is also being aggressively discounted, though it has been out longer and resale value will probably be better. T-mobile has the 64GB version for $699 - $100 and a free year of Netflix, making it actually cheaper. There are ongoing promos to use Samsung Pay as well ($50 additionally off).

If you're interested in heavy mobile gaming then the iphone is your only choice. Sorry but that's just a fact.
Android is great at everything except gaming.

Gaming on android is laggy, the games look like shit, they are optimized like shit, and the GPU will likely throttle to a mere fraction of its advertised clock speed after 5 minutes of gameplay rendering the game unplayable.

Meanwhile on iphones games are smooth, they have better textures and additional graphical effects, infinitely better optimization (since game devs develop primarily for ios while android is an afterthought), most games are starting to use the metal API, but most importantly you can play games on an iphone for 3 hours staright without ever experiencing any performance throttling as iphone chips are far more stable and thermally efficient than android phones.

"Gaming on android is just fine"
That's the actual bullshit.
Yes, if you only plan to play Candy Crush and Flappy Bird then gaming on Android is just fine, otherwise it most certanly is NOT fine.

Playing Madden, GTA:SA, FF3, NFS:MW and tons more. They play fine. Hell, they played fine on my old Note 3.

Depends on your definition of fine. If fine means laggy, throttling performance, and looks like shit, then yes, games do run fine on android.

Guys, take this Apple vs. Android crap to another thread. We're here to talk about a single piece of hardware, and the recent discussion was about one piece of hardware vs. other options. If you like the iPhone better, that's great. Even fighting about gaming on different mobile platforms is great, but not here.

Android gaming is fine and has been for years, I also agree this is not really the thread for it, not even sure why it was brought up to be honest...

I haven't seen much discussion anywhere about the LG V10's sound capabilities with the onboard DAC that it has. For those who really value high-quality audio, this would be seem to be a significant purchasing factor.

Here's a post about it at Head-Fi... interesting.
http://www.head-fi.org/t/785335/lg-v10-hi-fi-audio-quality-review-on-serious-audio-performance

And...

I'm considering this phone along w/ the N6P.... This AIN'T EASY...

IT does sound great. And with the link I provided earlier the 32bit dac now works on most audio and video apps.
