I'm not sure what these are, but if it's basically those unlicensed taxi apps I've heard about it sounds dangerous as fuck

do you have a CDL with a passenger endorsement and a current medical card?

if not, i would not touch that job. risk is too high.

LMK how it goes, I was thinking about signing up as an Uber driver. Did you have to actually go through an application process? If so, how was it?

Yep that's it. I feel way safer because the person's identity is known beforehand (tied to credit card) and there's multiple devices tracking location. If anything happens to the driver OR the passenger, at least cops will be able to track using cell coordinates.

The recent case of the Uber driver killing that kid in SF raises a lot of questions about how insurance works/doesn't work when you do this.

The recent case of the Uber driver killing that kid in SF raises a lot of questions about how insurance works/doesn't work when you do this.

Latest details I could find...

An Uber driver killed a 6-year-old female pedestrian in a New Year’s Eve traffic accident in San Francisco.

Update: The driver was an Uber partner, Uber announced today in an updated statement. The company has deactivated his account. Earlier, Uber had said that if the driver involved in the accident was an Uber partner, the account would be deactivated. “The driver was not providing services on the Uber system during the time of the accident,” Uber said in the updated statement.

The statement may imply that the driver may have been in between Uber fares at the time of the accident, given it happened on New Year’s Eve.

Uber has positioned itself as a more tech-savvy alternative to the relatively hidebound and heavily regulated taxi industry. The accident could have big implications for Uber — and for ridesharing companies like Lyft and Sidecar — by giving taxi supporters ammunition for a political battle. It also raises questions about the company’s responsibility for the actions of its drivers.

Uber initially attempted to distance itself from the situation. A spokesperson declined via email to answer questions about the accident, offering the statement, “We work with transportation providers across the Bay Area, but we can confirm that this tragedy did not [Uber's emphasis] involve a vehicle or provider doing a trip on the Uber system.”

The San Francisco Police Department later identified the driver as Syed Muzzafar of Union City, Calif. Muzzafar posted the $300,100 bail yesterday, and he will return to court on Jan. 7, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Superior Court wrote in an email to VentureBeat.

In a phone conversation with VentureBeat, Officer Gordon Shyy of the San Francisco Police Department said the driver was booked for vehicular manslaughter.

Shyy told VentureBeat that he’s looking into the case and will release more information as soon as he can.

The news came in a report yesterday from ABC7 News, which attributed the information to police.

Earlier on New Year’s Day, the San Francisco Chronicle reported the death of Sophia Liu, 6, of San Francisco. The accident occurred at around 8 p.m. in the Tenderloin neighborhood. The car also struck Sophia’s brother and mother. All three went to San Francisco General Hospital after the accident.

VentureBeat will update the post if we receive more information on the accident or the company’s actions.

the application process was pretty simple. they only accept cars 2003 or newer. which is kind of arbitrary because my 2001 acura 3.2TL is nicer than the 2004 Honda Accord I ended up having to use.

basically you upload some documents like insurance, license, etc... then you take a very basic online video tutorial with some quiz questions. takes about 20 minutes. then you wait a couple days until they approve you and give you a time/place to pick up your iphone.

Wait, they actually give you a phone specifically for this reason? I thought it was an app on your personal phone you used.

yep. that's what i thought but Uber gives you an iPhone. it takes a $300 deposit, however they send me an email to pick my phone up at an event and they would waive the fee.

i'll be using my android phone as my GPS and using the Uber iPhone just to schedule pickups.

For some reason I thought the vetting process was a little stricter. Is there no in person interview?

So went to my uber phone pickup today. it was in Jersey City. They had a promo where they would waive the $300 iphone deposit fee. Also if you give 10 rides within your first 30 days, you get a $250 reward. I am a jersey Uber driver. We can drop off people in Manhattan but can't do any pickups in NYC - to be an Uber driver there you must have a CDL and Commercial Plates.

Getting the car washed tomorrow morning. I shoot freelance Real Estate photography primarily Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Ft Lee and those areas. Turns out those get the most Uber traffic. So works out, I'll be in the prime areas doing a shoot, then can log onto Uber and take care of a few rides then go home.

I may start tomorrow since I have a shoot in JC. I'll report back.

why'd you choose UberX over Lyft?

I suspect if you wanted to network that Lyft would be better, its kind of expected you sit in the front seat and chat with the driver and do the fistbump when you leave. I've never been in an UberX but I don't think they have the same kind of culture.

I've never used Lyft but I use UberX and regular Uber often. It all depends on who you get as a passenger and usually people who use Uber are higher rollers.

i actually applied to both. for some reason the lyft app would simply not let me log on my galaxy s4. i tried a bunch of stuff but no go.

I love the ultra hypocritical bullshit associated with services like these, no doubt it's probably invented by some liberal assholes who'd fight "deregulation" of corporations to his stinky death but then turn around and run an illegal taxi service and call it "share ride". That's rich.

Are you mad that you didn't think of the idea first? Uber is way better than waiting an hour for a taxi on a Friday night to have them come and tell you you can't pay with credit card.

This x1000. Uber is especially worth it when the weather sucks and you get picked up in your own personal SUV while everyone else is fighting for regular cabs or hoofing it.
