Anybody here own an Expedition?

I was looking at used expeditions and they can be had for pretty cheap. Any thoughts on reliablity and issues in these trucks ?

My mom has a 2001. It has ~115k miles on it. Overall, strong running truck. Ours had an "issue" where my dad's dad decided to go in 4 low on the freeway. Destroyed bearings in the engine (needed new crank), but the tranny and transfer case have been fine since (~5k miles). They are comfortable, ours gets ~15-17mpg.

if u don't see many of them on the roads now (even older ones, prior to 2002) probably means it was junkyarded.

i don't know about you but in the NYC area there aren't many at all. i wouldn't do it.

i'd buy that expedition if you like to fill up @ $50/tank (est every week) getting 9mpg

I had a 99 and it was rock solid and very roomy, plenty of power as well. We got about 12-14 mpg in ours.

We still have ours. 1999 about 190,000ish miles on the original motor/trans/transfer case.

Most repairs have been piddly crap:

Battery and Alternator maybe $200, that was a long time ago.

Heater core, did myself for $100 in parts, had an estimate for $700 at a shop, it is labor intensive.

Put in a new radiator/water pump/belt/thermostat for about $400 in parts.

Had a recent $500 tab at the shop for brakes all around (needed a couple of rotors) and some worn out front end bits.

That has been the worst of its repair history, other than that its been a great truck. It does only get about 12-13 MPG, but ours is pulling 32" tires with 3.35 gears, so the motor works pretty hard to get it around. It has the 5.4 liter motor, and has a little valve rattle on a cold start, but that goes away in just about 45 seconds.

I get the impression that the mileage, not the reliability, is what keeps them off the roads these days.

In NYC everyone drives a crown vic or a Lincoln anyway

in nyc most people drive accords/civics and the old ladies drive the camrys. another popular segment in nyc is the small-midsized SUV: think crv-mdx-fx35

Thanks for the input, I saw a 97 plain jane one with 90k miles for about 5G's around my way, gonna take a closer look. ITs mainly going to be a car for trips and utility, nothing more.

What are the engine options for this truck ?

4.6 liter Triton V-8

5.4 liter Triton V-8


Pretty sure the small V-8 is a 4.6 liter, I think Ford's V-6 that they put in trucks is a 4.2 liter V-6, but the 6 isnt an option on the Expedition.

One of the biggest issues I am aware of is the air suspension that you will find on some of the Eddie Bauer 4x4 models. If this goes out, you are talking a minimum of $1000 to repair, posssibly twice that much, so avoid that if possible.

I used to own a 2000 5.4 liter Triton V-8 Expedition...

Had around 80K before selling it due to high cost of gasoline. SUV was great. The only problems I had were the busted motor for the rear window wiper and malfunctioning digital odometer which were repaired under warranty.

Well it was a big advancement. The older ones had the very rounded torque curve.

My parents used to have a 98 5.4l expedition. That thing was rock solid, roomy, reliable and towed great. They only got rid of it to get something smaller. They replaced it with a fairly new Jeep cherokee, and the expedition pulled and stopped the boat around much better than the jeep due to its size.

My dad has the F-150 w/4.6. No problems at really and he;s up to ~100k miles. Pretty solid drivetrain...too bad Ford can't say the same for their cars

Yeah, when they mount the engine longitudinally, they are reliable as hell. However, the general public prefers transverse and that is their particular weakpoint, for whatever reason.

hey there

i ve got a 2000 with 55,000 original, found it in a corporate garage:beer:,

power everything,leather, mine is a freak, it gets 15-17 mpg and have had no

real mechanical probs yet, i do a lot of surf casting and theres nothing like cranking

along smithspoint or montauk in a little style, ive yet to air down once,

now that ive given it the kiss of death, ill prolly get stuck tommorrow

just my 2 cents of course
