Any of you guys purchased a FURY NANO lately which doesn't have COIL WHINE? I'm wondering if the coil whine issue is now fixed since release..

I want to stick it in my HTPC in my living room and get a VR headset.

I have one that has a little coil whine. Nothing bothersome. They have improved since the early releases I believe.

Thanks for the reply, been reading the reviews around the net at amazon, newegg. Seems like even the newer customer reviews mention coil whine (even with the white edition from ASUS).

Would really like the NANO but the R9 FURY also looks good, dunno why everyone is building it with humongous coolers though Looks like it'll be a while till AMD releases a new video card that will surpass the FURY in performance.

Just take a chance with the Nano. Jet.com with the shop15 coupon makes them pretty cheap. Yes, they have coil whine, so did my Sapphire R9 Fury, and so did my Zotac AMP 980ti.

I bought a fury nano at the end of February and haven't noticed any coil whine. My nano is also at the edge of my case with easy access to open air. I haven't heard it. I will note that it does run loud if it is in an enclosed space without access to cool air. Basically, the fan is quite audible past 55% fan speed; I set my clock to 950 Mhz and vcore to -20 mV and it rarely spins up past 50% now.

You can try underclocking and see if that helps if you do, people have had good luck underclocking the Nano and having it run at full speeds even easier (less heat)

I only really hear coil whine on gpu's with very high fps, I doubt there will be much if you run a ~200 fps limiter.

All of my gpu's whined a little if you really listen with your ear right next to it.

either really lucky or my components dont add to the whine.
check the psu seems to be one thing.

I bought three Fury Nano's and returned them all (what a waste of time) due to excessive coil while. There's coil whine then there's Nano coil whine.

I've purchased 13 new cards since the Nano's and guess what, only mild coll whine on my Fury X's, the 11 other cards (10 390's, one 970) have zero to effectively imperceptible whine in an open case unless you stick you ear directly beside the card.

Fury Nano's are defective by design. If you get one that doesn't whine go ahead and run Valley Benchmark and make a recording because I don't believe you

I never noticed any whine on any of my cards until I picked up a R9 290X and replaced the cooler with a full cover water block. You can definitely hear it, but I just deal with it. You can barely hear it over the pump anyway, and the card has never really given me any problems except for heat with the stock cooler.

I've heard a TON of complaints regarding the nano and honestly if the card works well I feel like it's not really "defective" albeit a little noisy.

Will your case fit a Sapphire Nitro Fury? It will out perform a nano, quieter, and no coil whine.

I just purchased an ASUS Radeon R9 NANO in white, crossing my fingers Coil Whine won't be an issue (might not be as noticeable as it'll be in the living room).

Really planning on coupling it with the HTC VIVE ( I got a Mini-ITX case).

Good luck, I love that color profile. Please update the thread if you get a card that doesn't sound a Cicada bug.

I bought a Asus Nano 2 weeks ago and when i first put it in my PC and bootet up WoT i was shocked. The coil whine in the menu was pretty bad.
I then switched the 6pin connector to another one from my PSU, and now it's quiet.
Even with a waterblock now, i can barely hear it in high FPS menus.

Just a thought if anybody has bad coil whine and the PSU has different 12v lines. Seems the card is a bit sensitive with the power supply.

That's a very good thought. I'd recommended a Nano to a friend for a build because she has a small case that wouldn't fit one of the larger models. Completely forgot about the coil whine, and we've yet to get around to building it so the 2 week EU return window has gone.

This may help if there are any issues. I'd give you rep if I could.

Its your power supply that is creating the whine, not the cards. Especially if you had three. It has already been proven you can get a Nano without whine or little whine.

No it's not. Do some research beyond a few anecdotal responses (including my own) on this forum and you'll see this is a problem with the cards. Try starting at PCPer or Hardwarecancucks.

For the record I tried three different Gold+ power supplies, Superflower Leadex, Seasonic and CWT designs.

It won't matter if the card is defective. Luck of the draw.

Hey funks, did you get a chance to test your new card out yet?

Receiving it this upcoming week, it will be paired with a new Seasonic G Series 550W power supply. If it gets coil whine, will post it up.

Great that's a good power supply. One thing I noticed when testing for coil whine is stressing the card out overnight quieted down the last Fury Nano a little bit. You can do this by just launching a game like TF2 and leaving it at the menu screen so it draws as many FPS as possible. I had a Geforce 970 (Asus Strixx) last year that exhibited similar behaviour where the coil whine faded after a number of hours of gaming. It never went away completely but was tolerable in a HTPC.

After "burning in" your card lock the max refresh rate to 60Hz. It should quiet down a lot but if you got a real bad one you will still hear it over your case and CPU fans. A good game to test for coil whine at 60Hz is Metro Last Light. That game still made all three cards scream even locked to 60 during the benchmark test. Another good game is Borderlands 2. That game also locked to 60hz would make the cards scream.

And people may think I'm exaggerating about my experience with these cards but even my wife in another room, around 15 - 20 feet away asked me "what is that sound" lol.

If you do get a defective one just send it back. Polaris cards will be out soon enough and I'm sure given the power consumption we'll soon see ITX sized cards show up.

Good luck!

EDIT:

For the record my card sound like this only much louder and at a higher pitch. To be honest if it was *only* that bad I would have kept it.

I just finished a build with an R9 Nano and the card (XFX) has some coil whine, a bit like an insect buzzing intermittently. It's only audible under heavy load (benchmarking, gaming, mining) and isn't extremely annoying, but I definitely would not put a Nano in any system that's meant to be very quiet. Usually if I'm stressing the card, though, I have speakers playing or headphones on (gaming) or I'm not using the system (ethereum mining). More than a few feet away from the case the noise isn't a problem.

Out of curiosity, are you guys using any framelimiters or V-Sync at all?

Finally installed it last night (Seasonic PS and the NANO - White Edition). It's a Silverstone GD-05 case which has a whole bunch of fans (CPU FAN, PS FAN, and 3 120MM Fans), then there's a CABINET FAN (to help manage the heat being put out by the computer and the receiver in an enclosed space).

I'm gonna check out the benchmarks listed tonight if I get coil-whine. Disable any frame limiters and v-sync while testing right?

Card kicks ass though, aside from being small, I can enable everything in Project Cars at 1080P. Coupled with a 2600K CPU, and 8 GIGS of RAM, crossing my fingers this stuff will be enough for the Oculus Rift (primarily for Car Racing / Sim stuff)
