Anybody know how Time Warner assigns IP addresses?

Do they assign them automatically and randomly to anybody connected to their network or is it specific to the cable modem you get?

Reason I ask is I need to replace my modem but I have to have an IP in a specific range for some web admin work I do. I can get the allowed range changed if necessary, but it would just be easier to start with a good IP. And I'm curious.

Not sure about Time Warner, but IP addresses are based on the MAC address and you have no control over what is assigned by the pool.

They choose a random number and write it down on a lettuce leaf. They then send a photo of this lettuce leaf down your tube so your computer can decode it.

Its randomly assigned, you can't control, they dont let you change to another random one either, forget about specific range...

If you want a static IP, (ie, one that don't change) then you need to get a business account.

likely random DHCP from their block every time you need a new one.

but im sure they could figure out how to keep its static if you pay them.

why dont you just set up a dynamic DNS?

The allowable range is set by the actual site admin, I actually just ftp in to upload and change ads and sign in the CP to add articles, things like that. I'm not sure why he keeps it set to this particular range but he won't change that practice. I've asked. Somehow for the last 6-8 months I've been able to keep the same IP so I always assumed it was assigned to the router's MAC address like John Connor said. I was hoping it was something Time Warner could control easily, though. It would have been easier to get them to give me an IP than get him to change the range. lol

I'll check in to the VPN thing cause that's probably my next best option after getting the IP from TW I need. I appreciate all the answers, and that's kinda what I was thinking. I'm just not sure how I got to keep the IP I have for so long. I would've thought if they really used DHCP it would've released my IP sometime in the last 6 months and it would have changed.

I did call TW and asked, and they were zero help. He assured me I could freely browse the web with whatever IP they gave me, wherever I want.

Its DHCP, you can get a static one for a business account. Dynamic DNS is the easiest way to deal with the volatility of your IP if you need remote access.

I used to be able to get a new IP by unpluging my cable modem power cord, changing the mac address of the router or device connected to the modem, and plugging the modem back in. Not sure if it still works, or if it ever worked everywhere.

IP addresses are most typically governed by DHCP. They are not specific to anything aside from the IP pool and IP range they belong to. They operate on leases with a set life cycle. You won't get a new IP address by unplugging or release/renewing unless you're at the end of your current IP addresses lease cycle or there's some other reason like some changes made to the DHCP server or what not.

In other words, like was already said, lettuce leaf! :d

edit: just realized you are asking because of needing something specific. for your uses you should get a static IP address. providers do not typically offer this for residential services anymore. you'll need a business account if you don't already have one, unless you can get your provider to assign a static IP for your residential account (good luck with that haha - not impossible, but pretty unlikely).

Charter assign IP addresses from a pool. I have had the same IP address for a long time because it is reserved for the MAC address of my router. I changed out modems recently, and got the same IP.

At one point I wanted to change my IP (use your imagination :hmm, and all I had to do was modify the MAC of the WAN side of my router, and power cycle everything (modem and router) and my new IP was in a totally different network.

I also have Charter (One of the worst cable companies out there) I have also had the same IP address for awhile do you know how often Charter assigns new IP addresses?

They do dhcp via mac address, you change mac you will get a new IP. If you need the same ip, its time to pony up for a business account so you can keep it. All it would take is a power outage and your dhcp lease could be lost.
