Just planning on putting it on quite a few computers. So can I use the one email address and does the client software start up automaticlly when the computer gets turned? If not, is there a way I can make it do so?

Thanks.

I know for rc5 you can use the same e-mail on multiple computers.

To have the client start with the computer, just put a shortcut for the client in the windows start-up folder.

With RC5 you can use i with the same email on every machine. A good example of that are the mini teams here. Diffeent people are using the same email so that their combined output looks more impressive.

As far as starting the client when the machine starts up there are a couple of ways of doing it.
1: Like drewski said, put it in the startup folder
2: Install it as a service. The command to do that is c:/client_directory/dnetc -install
where the directory is where you installed the client.

Advantages of 2 are that since it is a service it will start up before the user is logged in. Useful for those machines that sit at the login prompt for long periods of time. Also the client is then not listed under the 95/98 task manager. People also will not see it in the startup foleder and think "I don't need this" and kill it from the folder.

The biggest thing, since you mention loading it on a lot of machines, is that you have to have permission to install it on the machine. If you get caught with it illegally on machines you can get banned from DNet, you can get your team banned from DNet, and several people have been fired & fined by their companies for doing it without permission.

Also I believe if you want to start it up the "first" time without rebooting

dnetc -svcstart

Also, It is easiest ( for the roll out) if you are doing it manual to make one .ini for all the machines. Put the dnetc client and the ini on a floppy ( or netoworked folder) and just copy it to any directory you want. then do the dnetc -install from that directory and your all set!

About 50 or so.

There's two other rooms of computers at this place, but they got cut off from the net because too much porn was being accessed. Is there any relatively simple way of harnessing those?

And about the files I need. I know I need the DNETC.exe file and that's a good idea to copy the DNETC.ini file. Is that all the files I need to get it going? I don't need the DNETC.SCR file? And the installation wont overwrite or use it's own DNETC.ini file? Thanks.

Triplej,
For that many PCs if they are all on the same network, You can run a personal proxy on on of the PCs that has an Internet connection, and the proxy can fetch/flush blocks for all of the other PCs. This not only reduces network traffic, but you can buffer enough WUs to last for several days in case the Internet connection is down, or dnet has problems. Plus there are stats proggies you can use to see the stats of each PC. Some people use them to help monitor the network.

The DNET.SCR is a screen saver version, if you are running the client installed as a service you don't need it. The client will use the dnetc.ini file, and will only overwrite it if you run the dnetc -config or modify the .INI file yourself.

What I did was create a folder on a network drive accessable from all PCs that contains DNETC.EXE, DNETC.INI (configured the way I want), and a number of BAT files (or shortcuts) with some of the CLI commands, such as

DNETC -INSTALL
DNETC -SVCSTART
DNETC -FLUSH
DNETC -FETCH
DNETC -SHUTDOWN
DNETC -UNINSTALL

Then I just copy that folder to the PC, execute the DNETC -INSTALL shortcut, the DNETC -SVCSTART shortcut, watch for it to create the BUFF-IN.RC5 and BUFF-OUT.RC5 files, the ckpoint file, and the log file.

RaySun2Be,
They are all on the same network but I don't have access to them all from one computer.

well if the computers in the "other rooms" are networked to a computer that can access the net , then you can set up your own personal proxy. If you want to do that I'm sure there are plenty of people that will offer their help.

EDIT : How fast of computers are we talking here? and how many computers are in the "other rooms"?

Dang, I don't have access to the computer that does. All those wasted cycles.

They are all Plll 600's and there's about another 40 in the other rooms. About to head off now and execute my mission so I'll report back upon completion. Wish me luck

I'm in the room and I've got some problems.

Firstly, I'm not sure how to do that c:/client_directory... thingo. Any pointers please?
I have just tried to install it normally on one of the computers.
It comes up with this when I try to fetch and flush:

<< ENOENT: no entry for requested name
[Jun 18 03:56:58 UTC] Net::failed to resolve name "us.v27.distributed.net"
ENOENT: no entry for requested name>>

But it seems to be crunching away and it says this:

<<[Jun 18 03:58:44 UTC] RC5: 0 packets remain in buff-in.rc5
[Jun 18 03:58:44 UTC] RC5: 5 packets (5.00 stats units) are in buff-out.rc5>>

What's going on?

I got the computer to run it as a task, so it starts at the startup of the computer and it can't be seen in the task bar. I can see it running when I go Ctrl-Alt-Del and have a look in the task list (CPU usage 99% ) But I think it will still come up with this message:

[Jun 18 03:56:58 UTC] Net::failed to resolve name "us.v27.distributed.net"
ENOENT: no entry for requested name

Hmmm, any ideas?

Thanks

First off, are you sure this computer has net access? That is the message I get whenever a computer doesn't have a working net connection. Are you behind a firewall of some sorts?

The reason it shows that you have blocks in the buff-out is because you are crunching randoms. Some of these will count towards your total, and some won't (the ones that have already been checked by somebody else). But without a net connection, there is no easy way to flush them apart from sneaker-net (i.e., copying the buff-out to a floppy and taking it to another computer).

Considering I'm posting from the computer, it probably is connected to the net. It must be behind a fire wall. Ah well, I had a red hot go at least.

A firewall doesn't mean you're screwed, it just means that you have to be a little bit more creative with your setup. I don't know much about it but if you can give some specifics I'm sure somebody can help you figure it out.

Umm, I'm not sure what specifics that I need to give.

I'll have a go:
Windows 2000
Runs on Novel Networks

What else should I tell you?

Thanks

Try this (in the ini file)

[networking]
keyserver=proxy80.teamanandtech.com:80
nettimeout=5
autofindkeyserver=no
firewall-type=http
nofallback=true

This works for my firewall whitch only allow port 80 connection.
keyserver means I can se it on www.teamanandtech.com stats
You could replace this with your own proxy..

Even if you have no joy getting through the firewall, you can do what I do. Have one PC be the pproxy and the other PCs fetch and flush to that one. Then I use a floppy or email to get the blocks home where I upload them to dnet and get new work.

Yeah, it would be nice if it was completely automatic, but I only spend about 5 minutes two times a week keeping things running. I could cut it down more, but I want stats updated more often.

If the problem is DNS resolution of the DNet keyservers, then just substitute the TCP/IP address.

Currently, a Ping shows 63.77.33.226

Sometimes, a firewall just prevents DNS lookups.

I'm not having any luck. Is there any way that I can tell you guys enough info for you to tell me how to do it? I'm getting a little confused with how to do it all. Looks like I should start a fresh and go from there.
