I want the cheapest roof over my head I can get. So, what's it like living in a trailer? I'd like to live in something completely paid for.

A nice trailer can be a nice place to live, but they are not meant to last. But even then they can be anywhere from 15-30k.

I've never lived in one, but had friends that did. They can be pretty nice...

Remember that you have to buy/rent the trailer and then buy/rent the lot that the trailer is going to be on.

You do not want to live in a trailer park. Trust me. There are people in trailer parks that will siphon the gas out of your lawnmower to get to work.

Most trailer parks are trouble. Try to get cheap land in an area that accepts double-wides.

some of my friends live in trailers. I have never had to and hope i never will. I would live in an apartment before i would in a trailer, but of course we stay under a tornado warning here and i cant stand the feeling of hearing the entire house shake as you walk thru it.

I lived in one for a couple of months when I needed short-term housing while my house was being rented to people that needed it a couple more months. It was a single-wide on a private lot. It wasn't horrible; I certainly would consider doing it again before I would ever consider an apartment again.

A *lot* of people have negative thoughts about folks that live in trailers... I say the hell with them. Mind you, there are a lot of people that live in trailer parks that I feel don't deserve to ever see the sun shine.

My grandmother lived in a double-wide, placed on one of our farms... was put on the farm in 1984, still in decent condition. While I'll be the first to admit that house's construction could be better, I like the way it's set up, I like a lot of stuff about it... I would live in that house, or one like it, over an apartment.

I know quite a few people that lived in trailers on their farms, while they were building their own houses... I think that's respectable.

I agree. If you have your own land, and you take care of your place, it can last a long time. And be nice. Plus once you own it, if you ever wanna get a house, you can always rent the place out. But with that comes liability.

I know a very wealthy man who prefers to live in a trailer over anything else, He says its very nice and quiet in the trailer parks here (in ontario canada), although I found it very odd, because he is making over 150k per year and has a '02 Mercedec Kompressor (those hatchbacks) and a '03 Ford Winstar.

Well on the surface I am a bit ashamed to admit it, but for the last 3 years of college I lived in a trailer. 72 feet of single wide lovliness. First year was in the dorms as it should be but after that I bought a trailer in the Chateau Manor trailer park. I even bought some pink flamingos while on spring break and put them in my front "yard". My next door neighbor's name was Wade, he drove and '81 Trans Am and worked nights as a stocker in a grocery store. Yep, at that point I could officially be classified as trailer trash. But that's only part of the story.

I never offer up the story if I can't explain the whole situation. Cuz if I'm engaged in simple conversation and say hey, I lived in a trailer, I immediately sense my public opinion rating going staight into the toilet. There's a certain snobbiness I've aquired over the years and admitting that I lived in a trailer is difficult to do. Maybe until I can justify it with how the math worked out.

Like badmouse mentioned, even though it was a "trailer", I wanted an assett instead of a rent liability. I bought the rig outright for $7200...plus tax...titled in my 19 year old name. Lot rent was $174 a month. Phone, Electric, Cable were all expenses too but in an apartment I figured I would have the same thing. I charged a roomate $225 a month and his portion of the phone bill during the school year. He stayed in town for work during the summer and I was able to charge him $425 for those 4 months.

For the 37 months I lived there, doing some quick math shows me that I spent $6438 on lot rent - but made $10500 by renting to roommates. I fortunately sold the thing as soon as I moved out for $7600 minus a $1500 commision to the broker. That means I basically got paid $9526 to live there for those three years. Not bad for a punk ass kid to get out of college with a check from the bank, instead of a check to the bank. Moved back home to live with mom and dad for 8 months before I got my first job....during which time I made bank as a bartender and drove a new 5 liter Mustang.

So for $9526 I ate a little humble pie and made out like a miniature Donald Trump...I shoulda bought two! Now, nobody knows...

Oh by the way, Wade, my old neighbor, turns out at the time he had like $95 G's in the bank and now today has 2 Subway restaurants...maybe looking stupid can be smart after all

My grandparents lived in a trailer, but not in a trailer park. Their trailer was pretty nice for what they paid for it, but you still have to buy the land to put it on.

A trailer or a mobile home?

There is a difference.

i have lived in both . . . a rented mobile home for 6 months on private property (it was Ok, but you hear the wind and the rain more than in a "regular" house) and in my 27' Airstream Travel trailer on my property for about a year while building my current house over 20 years ago - it was a bit cramped.

It's a good alternative to renting.

and some "trailer parks" are nice
(the ones on golf courses)

depends.

Do you want a real mobile home? or a manufactured home? or pre-fab home? there is a diffrence. One is what you think of when you ssay trailer trash. They are really cheap. Freezing in the winter and hot in the summer. They are delivered on wheels! they have actual axles on them.

manufactured (or prefab cant remember) are real homes. The walls, flooring etc are premade and they are brought in on a Semi truch and put together on the lot. They may look like a crappy trailer but they are as nice as a build house. BUT they are a LOT more expensive.
There is a area in town that has these. They start off at $69k for a 3 bedroom "double wide". You have to rent the land but they are really nice.

Trailer parks are the #1 cause of tornados.

Also , think of all the extra expense you'd go through to live in a trailer. You'd have to buy a Trans Am, get a mullet, get a taste for Pabst Blue Ribbon, start watch watching Jerry Springer and Judge Judy on a regular basis, get a lawyer to get you a disability on a fake injury so you could collect social security instead of working....it's all so much trouble.

Positives:
Cheaper than a house
Can own in short amount of time

Negatives:
More expensive than they are worth
Lot Rent + Trailer Payment is almost the same as a small house
They only last ~30 years
Usually higher crime rate
You live in a trailer park...

I've been thinking the same thing too. I was thinking about bidding on government land and buying a mobile home to place there. But the stigma bugs me like crazy. Besides, how much do I stand to profit years from now?

Now I'm debating a modular home, a new home or just bidding on an old home on a government auction site.

theres nothing wrong with living in a decent trailer. my wife and i rented one before. only time i ever stayed in one. it wasnt a trailer park, but a neighborhood with trailers. i dont know if you can really seperate the 2, but most parks here have like 30 sandwiched on an acre lot. these were all on about a .5/acre of thier own placed on a state road. it was basically your normal neighborhood, but with trailers instead of houses. all of the were kept up, and we actually met some really nice and decent people the year we lived there.

we were renting a house with her cousin, but he skipped out on us, and left all his bills unpaid, so we had to go. pllus, we wanted to save for a house. the one we were renting was 550, and the trailer was 325/125deposit, so thats a decent chunk of savings to put back. i personally didnt want to, because i knew my wife would grow to hate it. but after a few "just wait, youll see"s, i agreed. we lived there for about 9mos, and then spring came. that year, the storms were particularly violent, but nothing too dangerous. until that fateful night...

it was about 2 am. i was up playing some tekken 3, and it started to rain. i was tired and figured that was a good time to hit the sack with the patter of the rain to help carry me to dreamland. i go to the bedroom, and i start the hear thunder and see some flashes of lightning, even better to help me sleep, i thought. change into my pjs, and the rain and wind get pretty intense. i look out the window, and the trees are thrashing and the rain is swirling. i can hear the wind whipping around the trailer and feel it pushing on it. that made me nervous, so i walk into the living room to get a better view. i look outside, and the rain is going sideways, and i start to hear a tapping on the roof, like hail. thats when i got scared. so i go to wake the wife, and i hear the wind start to make some awful howling noise and thats when i thought ok, time to get everyone gathered just in case. as im waking the wife, the wind got very loud, and the fvcking roof started to ripple and sound like one of those sheets of medal they use to make the sound effects of thunder. holy fvck its a tornado!! i yell at the wife to get up, and i run through the trailer, grab my daughter and my son, and we all huddle in the middle of the living room with me laying on top of them all. that roof rippled so hard and loud, and the trailer started shaking. then, the window was sucked out!! holy motherfvcker we gotta get out of this death box! as soon as i stood to grab everyone to get out, it all stopped.

it was barely sprinkling then, so i got out the check for more damage. almost all the skirting was gone on our trailer, and the one across the street had windows gone and some skirting taken out. turns out it wasnt a tornado, but a down blast(?) of wind. at least, no tornados were reported that night, and none picked up on radar.

2nd most scaries moment of my life, and we moved out 2 months after that.
