Um, I'm Asian--I take my shoes off whenever I enter a household without even thinking about it.

It's just cleaner... not sure why this hasn't caught on in the "West" yet. Then again, took them a while to adopt bathing too...

So wood floors can't get dirty? :X - I must agree that carpet is for chumps though.

No. But I always take my shoes off in my house and even in other people's homes. I just don't like wearing shoes most of the time.

Also for people that ask guests to take off their shoes where do you keep them? Some hobos might grab them if they're outside - Got some kind of shoe...holding...device right inside the door?

I always ask if the host wants me to remove my shoes. I do in my own home and expect others to too. If someone doesn't want something on their feet that's what house slippers are for (I wear them myself and will often take my pair to someone's house if I know they want shoes taken off).

Yeahp - I always take off my shoes before entering the sitting room, and my bedroom. I wear shoes on the tiles and floorboards though (Hallways and Kitchen)

With the winters around here you pretty much have to. I don't really know what's worse: puddles all over my wood floors or the resulting stains from all the road salt that inevitably gets tracked in from the streets/sidewalks. I just carry the practice over to spring/summer/fall. Many years in the service industry have made me despise mopping...

i heard Japanese people also take their shoes off in their cars. Can anyone verify?

It is considered disrepectful in many Asian cultures to not take your shoes off when entering a person's home.

I would rather people show courtesy and take them off since I have cream/white carpets

I don't, but it's common courtesy to remove shoes when entering someone's house. The only time people don't take off their shoes is if the house is under total renovations, like subfloor exposed and all, or dirty covering plastic all over etc.

We have ceramic and vinyl flooring and DO NOT make people take their shoes off. It's a pain in the rear to have to take shoes off and put them back on at someone else's house.

My mom always insisted that we all take our shoes off, and I have to say that you can immediately tell if someone takes their shoes off in their homes cause their carpets look 10000 times better. It takes all of 2 seconds to do, and makes the carpets/rugs/wood floors/etc last a whole lot longer.

I do. No reason to wear shoes on ones carpet, it just makes it dirty. yes, peoples socks can have germs, but you do not SEE the germs. Don't wanna take your shoes off, do not come in my home.

I'll wear my shoes in the entryway, kitchen, or any flooring that does not have carpet. I'd rather not wear shoes on carpet because of dirt. Most people follow my lead if they're coming into my house... but I don't make a big deal of it regardless. If they don't, I'll vacuum and be done with it. I'm not going to stop them unless their shoes are obviously covered in mud and etc.

My sister and her husband are anal-retentive about this. The only place in their house that isn't carpeted is the linoleum floor square - no more than 3 sq ft - across which the front door swings. As a result, you have to "hug the door" to stay on that piece if you attempt to close the door (or open the door) while still wearing shoes. And if you step on the carpet with your shoes, then you might as well have pulled a gun out of your pocket, loaded it, aimed it, and started a countdown, because they'll be ready to either tackle you or shoot you. Not kidding.

I can't stand people who are so pissy about their flooring.

We take ours off, and while I wouldn't request out loud that a guest does, I would be sort of upset if they didn't.

Yes. No shoes are allowed past the entryways.

There is a shoe shelf in my mudroom by the garage entrance.

I also have footies for service workers who don't bother to bring their own so they don't have to take off their boots when they come in and out.

I live in Canada where it is expected that you will take your shoes off when you enter another person's house. As such, I expect that people take their shoes off but I wouldn't "make" them. I am not a jerk like that.
