What do you think about it? Does it stress your eye sight too much?
I know I can increase the DPI, but still, fonts looks small.

Anyway, I can only do it on XP for now, but I heard that Vista deals with DPI and font sizes better?

Thanks

For typing and general work or gaming?

I use my 24" iMac for work and love the real estate, its also a nice and bright screen. After staring at it for ~7hrs a day my eyes are fine.

Although I play games on a 19 so I can't help you here....sometimes I think about upgrading but I keep putting it off.

I have a 2405fpw. On a 19" I run 1280x1024. On my 24" lcd I run 1920x1200 and it's amazing. If you're used to similar resolutions you won't have any issues. The only issue with gaming is that some older games just flat out won't run that high or the latest and greatest will require some awesome video card power. Other than that, it's probably the best purchase I've made!

Oh, 15.4" screen, yeah 1920x1200 would be ridiculously small. On a 15" I'd say 1024x768 is about as far as you should probably go.

I have a 26" 1920x1200 and love it.

A 15.4" 1920x1200 would be ****ing amazing for gaming. You wouldn't even need AA.

icelazer, he's talking about a widescreen laptop (only way to get a 15" screen with a high resolution).

For non-gaming apps you'd want to raise the zoom or something a lot to make things readable unless you have superhuman vision.

With small font the trick is not to sit too far from the screen. If you can't see it, move closer...

EDIT 15 inch? Never mind...

For gaming I love my 24"

For reading it is a bit of a problem. My computer chair is a recliner so I sit back a foot or more further than in the office. I don't have the best eyes either. The perks are nicer than the downfalls imo.

In that case for browsing the text might be too small on the default setting. But IE7 easily allows larger text, and I imagine FF 3 does as well even though I don't know where it is.

But for your photos and videos I imagine it would look really sharp.

It's a notebook, 15.4 widescreen guys. And I don't game. I work with the computer.

My concern with the "move closer" is that it's not really good for the eyes I think. I have been working with computers for 17 years and now I am 32 years old and I don't wear glasses. I am just afraid of messing up my sight.

I'd use something less than 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 for a 15" physical screen.
1900x1200 on a 24" is great with large fonts enabled.

I think the best overall 'deal' for people who want larger fonts / easy to read screens AND a lot of screen real estate is to put two 20" LCDs side by side for expanded desktop area while keeping everything easy to read on each panel.

I can't wait for the improved high res. cheap wall projectors or direct eye projection high res. screens, though.

I wouldn't consider going past 1680x1050 on a 15.4" laptop. I'm 19 without glasses and this is about as small as I can read text. Pretty sure 19x12 would call for a magnifying glass..

No, I can use 1920x1200 on my monitor but found the print in applications was just too small.
I'm getting older and my sight isn't what it once was.
So currently I stay at 1600x1200 as max on a 21" CRT.

Could one of you please scale your 1920 down to 1680x1050 and let me know how it looks?

I am looking at an inspiron here and it doesn't seem to blur or damage the image at all. Seems like it just scaled down everything.

Thanks

On my NEC 24", 1920x1200 was just too small for me. The combination of high-resolution with low pixel pitch just made all the text and icons in Windows and applications impossible for me to read unless I sat way too close. After a few minutes, I'd get eye-strain and headaches. I spent hours playing with Windows DPI and font size settings, but they don't really work unless you're OK with the fact that all your menus are screwed up, some icons are blurry, and layout/format problems abound in Office and other apps.

On my Planar 26", 1920x1200 is perfect, because the physical size is larger, and the pixel pitch is higher. Everything is fine at default, with no need to adjust DPI or font size. I get all the workspace of 1920x1200 without any of the pain. I can sit at a reasonable distance and even see the details in the Vista micro-icons. Its much better than even 1600x1200 on a 21".

So IMO, 1920x1200 on a 26" or 27" is great, but any smaller than that and I just can't hack it. I'm in my mid-thirties and my eyesight is not what it once was, so others may disagree...but I don't blow all this money on video cards and LCDs so I can't read anything or see small icons or fine details in graphics.

Don't believe it. Vista itself handles different DPI settings fine, but alot of other software, including MS Office, and many Control Panel icons, do not. In Office 2007 for instance, if you go up even 1 point to 97 instead of 96 dpi, the icons and other graphics start to blur. Older applications are even worse. I tried so hard to make that work on my 24", but in the end, you either have to accept eye-strain or screwed-up layout, blurry icons, graphics, etc..

If you want 1920x1200, get a 26".

Im on my 28" Hannspree, 1920x1200 is great! Right now I use it for pc/ps3/tv. I can see everything perfectly without having to mess with any setitngs.

On a 15inch at that resolution i would suspect you would almost need a microscope to see the font without any problems. I had 1400x900 on my gateway fx laptop and that was perfect but it was also a 17inch I think.

I scaled it down to 1680x1050 and it was too big for me. Its probably because I'm used to 1920x1200. I'm using an DVI->HDMI cable because all my monitor has is 2-hdmi, component, and vga hookup

Hi,
It's either a 1440x900 or 1920x1200
1280x1024 is not a wide screen ration. So it either one or the other, that's why I am confused trying to decide.
a 1680 I think would be fine, but it's not available.

Not me personally, but I had a co-worker a while back who had a 1920x1200 15.4" screen on a laptop, and IMO everything was too small. It's not only the fonts, but some apps have fixed window sizes. You pretty much have to mess with everything for it not to be microscopic, so why not just save the cash and get a lower rez. We talked about it once, and he said that if he was to buy another laptop we wouldn't get a 1920x1200 laptop again.

I think if I was laptop shopping, I'd get a 1440x900 15.4 screen. If you really want the real estate (depending on your portability needs), you might want to consider a 17" laptop instead.

I have a Dell 17" laptop with 1920 x 1200 screen. I usually run it at 1440 x 900, but if I need the extra space I'll run it at full resolution. I can't use it at full res for more than a couple hours before my eyes hurt too much. I can't imagine what it would be like on a 15.4" screen - you'd be killing yourself to use that all day. The nice thing about small pixels is that the screen will scale well, so you can at lower resolution if your eyes get tired.

On my Dell, the following resolutions look good (IMO)
1280 x 800
1440 x 900

For some reason 1680 x 1050 doesn't look good, so I skip that one and go straight to 1920 x 1200 if I need a lot of screen real estate.

1900x1200 is way too small for a 15.4" screen. I had the same resolution on a 17" Dell 9300 and it gave me eyestrain over extended time. I am using 1280x800 on my current Dell 1525 and 1900x1200 on my 24" Soyo and I like both resolutions.

I have 1920x1200 on my 17'' laptop and its pretty dang small. I usually have the DPI kicked up to 120 on it to make it easier to read. With what you will be doing I think it would strain your eyes pretty badly at that resolution on a 15.4'' screen. Thats my opinion for what its worth.
